Bitter Feast

Reviewer: James Van Maanen

Rating (out of 5): **

What a collection of talent is gathered here: writer/directorJoe Maggio, who gave us the wonderful Virgil Bliss (2001) and the interesting Paper Covers Rock (2008); a cast of indie pros like James Le Gros, who’s coming up on a 30-year career of mostly independent film and TV, in which he’s always good and often charismatic; Joshua Leonard, so different here from his work in last year’s Humpday; the lovely Amy Seimetz, currently on a roll, after Alexander the Last, Tiny Furniture and Open Five; and producer/co-starLarry Fessenden, who’s always fun to watch ( I Sell the Dead, Wendy and Lucy) and whose production company Glass Eye Pix has given us some wonderful little “scare” movies of late. The result of all this talent blended into a chef-gets-revenge-on-food-critic thriller (in which even Mario Batali makes an appearance) is the disappointing Bitter Feast.

Interview: Indie Filmmaker Joe Maggio Cooks Up ‘Bitter Feast’

Chicago – New York filmmaker Joe Maggio is fascinated by the pursuit of redemption, particularly in stories featuring characters who may not entirely be worthy of it. His 2001 debut feature “Virgil Bliss” followed a man fresh out of prison as he attempted to build a new life. Maggio’s 2008 drama “Paper Covers Rock” told the story of a suicidal mother who fights to maintain custody of her daughter.

Redemption hardly seems possible for vitriolic food blogger Jt Franks (Joshua Leonard), as he finds himself held hostage by Peter Gray (James LeGros), the self-righteous yet deranged celebrity chef whose restaurant he panned. Gray acquires delicious revenge by forcing Franks to cook various dishes to perfection…or else. Hollywood Chicago spoke with Maggio about his own thoughts concerning modern criticism, the advantages and disadvantages of microbudget filmmaking, and the New

Advice on Shooting a Horror Film

I’d already made three feature films - Virgil Bliss (2001); Milk + Honey (2003); Paper Covers Rock (2008) - all of them indie character dramas, when Larry Fessenden of Glasseye Pix called and asked me if I had any horror scripts I’d be interested in making on a low budget. I’m not a horror guy. I mean, I love movies and there are certainly many horror films that I’ve enjoyed, but the thought of actually making a horror film seemed a bit of a stretch. That said, I’d never turn up the opportunity to make a movie, so I lied, said I had a script that needed a week of polishing. For the next seven days I wrote furiously, Glasseye accepted the first draft and my journey into the world of genre filmmaking was underway. Below I detail the single greatest tip I would pass along to anyone interested
