'Sims' creator Wright inks pact with Fox

Will Wright, creator of world-famous video game The Sims, has signed a first-look development deal with Fox Broadcasting Co. to develop new projects for the network. "Clearly Will's a genius, and he has the best-selling video game of all time with 'The Sims, ' so we decided to give him a basic development deal and see what he comes up with," said Mike Darnell, Fox executive vp alternative programming and specials. "It could be a sitcom or something completely different. This deal's not about taking a game and turning it into a TV show; it's about creating new entertainment franchises." Darnell believes that the growing video game industry's brightest creators, like Wright, will be able to cross over to traditional linear entertainment. Wright has been toying with linear entertainment during the past year, creating several five-minute episodes of M.Y. Robot that were written by Lew Morton of The Simpsons and Futurama. The original show concept blended puppetry with animation and was set in feudal Japan but dealt with modern-day suburban situations. »
