Russell Crowe, Hugh Jackman, Les Misérables Hugh Jackman‘s Jean Valjean and Russell Crowe‘s Inspector Javert are seen above in the upcoming Les Misérables movie, the big-screen version of Claude-Michel Schönberg and Alain Boublil‘s highly successful, Tony Award-winning stage musical, itself based on Victor Hugo’s novel. Tom Hooper, Oscar winner for The King’s Speech, directed. [Definitely not a musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber, as previously stated in this article. See comments below.] Les Misérables, of course, will arrive covered with a patina of "prestige." In addition to Tony Award winner Jackman (The Boy from Oz), and Oscar winners Crowe (Gladiator) and Hooper, the film’s cast boasts the following: The Dark Knight Rises star and Oscar nominee Anne Hathaway (Rachel Getting Married) as Fantine; two-time Oscar nominee Helena Bonham Carter (The Wings of the Dove, The King’s Speech) as the villainous Madame Thénardier; Mamma Mia!‘s Amanda Seyfried as Cosette; My Week with Marilyn‘s Eddie Redmayne as Marius, The Dictator‘s »

With his selection as jury member for the coming Cannes film festival recently announced, it's about time we acknowledged Gaultier's work on such films as The Fifth Element and The Skin I Live In
For as long as movies have been made, costume designers have been indispensible to creating a film's look and defining characters. Yet prior to this year, the last costume designer to sit on the Cannes jury was the spectacular Eiko Ishioka, who made her mark on films such as The Cell and Immortals, way back in 1996.
Who better, then, to thaw the 16 year fashion chill at Cannes than Jean Paul Gaultier? The designer's selection as a jury member for this year's film festival not only serves as a reminder of what Gauilter himself has offered cinema over the years but also draws attention to a relationship between fashion and film that is as old as the medium itself. »

Pedro Almodovar thrilled audiences late last year with the twisted "The Skin I Live In" so we didn't expect to hear from him so soon but earlier this year, his brother and regular collaborator Agustin Almodovar revealed on Spanish radio that they were plotting a "witty comedy, with very spicy dialogues and with a lot of fun and transgression" set for production this year. Whether Pedro liked it or not, his brother's loose lips also noted that "Bad Education" and "Talk To Her" star Javier Camara was on board to star in the pic as well. All exciting stuff.
Variety now reports of another piece of casting for "The Brief Lovers," as it's been titled, with regular Diego Luna collaborator Jose Maria Yazpik set to star opposite Camara in what seems to be the helmer's first out and out comedy since 1993's "Kika." The original report also added that the »

Jack Whitehall's new BBC Three sitcom has been tipped to become as popular as The Office or Gavin & Stacey. The Fresh Meat comedian stars as "the worst teacher ever to grace the British education system" in Bad Education, which he has also written. "Jack has written a very funny series and everyone is terribly excited about it," a source told The Sun. "It could be as big as The Office (more) »

This past weekend, Mexican actors Gael Garcia Bernal and Diego Luna co-star alongside comedian Will Ferrell in his subtitled, todo en espanol, satirical latest: Casa De Mi Padre, (Spanish for My Father’s House).
A rip on telenovelas -- a “soap opera” staple of Spanish language television -- the love triangles, backstabbing family members and overacting provides plenty of material for parody.
And, like a handful of Latin American actors who have successfully crossed over into the U.S. mainstream (i.e. Sofia Vergara, Salma Hayek, and Penelope Cruz to name a few) -- Bernal and Luna are no strangers to cinema.
Real-life childhood friends, Garcia and Luna are most recognized for their steamy roles in the critically acclaimed coming-of-age film Y Tu Mama Tambien, which was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay and a Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film in 2002.
Individually, Luna has appeared to U. »

You may know Ricardo De Montreuil best as the director of “The Raven,” not the James McTeigue-helmed Edgar Allen Poe actioner starring John Cusack, but rather the short film about a man named Chris Black who deals with the perils of having mysterious powers against the backdrop of a futuristic Los Angeles (watch it below). Well it looks as if Montreuil, who popped up on many in Hollywood’s radar with that short, could be taking a trip to the future once again.
We were shocked back in February when it was reported that free spirited actor Gael Garcia Bernal, who’s starred in some of the most memorable independent features of the past decade or so from Alfonso Cuaron’s “Y Tu Mama Tambien” to Pedro Almodovar’s “Bad Education,” would be taking the role of the legendary Zorro. Unlike Antonio Banderas in “The Mask of Zorro,” Bernal »

This week, we turn our focus to Spanish auteur Pedro Almodóvar, who has reunited with former collaborator Antonio Banderas for The Skin I Live In, which finds the acclaimed director wading further into the depths of genre than perhaps ever before, folding in aspects of the mad-doctor subgenre and even…torture porn? We’ll also rewind to talk about Bad Education, the writer-director’s 2004 effort.

Production begins this week on a new 6-part comedy drama series for BBC Three called Bad Education, written by and starring comedian and Fresh Meat star Jack Whitehall. Jack plays Alfie, the worst teacher ever to grace the British education system.
Co-written with Freddie Syborn, and produced by Tiger Aspect, Bad Education is a comedy about a teacher who’s a bigger kid then the pupils he teaches.
Alfie Wicker was always a loser; the kid that everyone gave up hope in, dropping back year after year at school and at university. But, in the end, he scraped through and got his Pgcse. And now, he’s got his first job as a teacher of a support class. His class is made up of pupils struggling to get through their Gcse’s and it’s his job to give them extra tuition in a selection of key topics. So, in a highly ironic way, »

José Coronado, No Rest for the Wicked Pedro Almodóvar didn't have much luck at the Spanish Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' Goya Awards this evening in Madrid: Almodóvar's The Skin I Live In won a total of four Goyas, but none for its director/writer. Starring Antonio Banderas as a plastic surgeon, Elena Anaya as his captive woman, and Jan Cornet as the good-looking young man whom the doctor blames for the death of his daughter, the sex-bending mystery melodrama won Goyas for Best Actress (Anaya), Best New Actor (Cornet), Best Original Music (Alberto Iglesias, his tenth Goya win), and Best Makeup/Hair. [Full list of Premios Goya winners/nominations.] Instead of the internationally renowned (and BAFTA winner) The Skin I Live In, the 2012 Goyas' big winner was Enrique Urbizu's No habrá paz para los malvados / No Rest for the Wicked, the story of a murderous, corrupt cop. No Rest for the Wicked won Goyas for Best Picture, »

The name may sound vaguely familiar and you have surely seen his face and acting talent on display in Amores Perros, Y Tu Mama Tambien, The Motorcycle Diaries, Bad Education and The Science of Sleep. Now after having built up a solid resume of independent films, actor Gael Garcia Bernal is making the leap to "tentpole actor" status. Fox has tapped Bernal to play Zorro in a futuristic reboot, titled Zorro Reborn. The plot will re-invent the masked swordsman by transplanting him into a post-apocolyptic future with a revenge tale that pays homage to Sergio Leone's films and the Coen Bros. No Country For Old Men. While you try to wrap your mind around that, Fox is still looking for a director to guide this film. In the meanwhile, are you curious...

The search for the new Zorro in the upcoming movie, Zorro Reborn, is over for 20th Century Fox. Mexican actor Gael Garcia Bernal has been cast as the ever famous swordsman in this futuristic reboot of the Zorro legend. Although Bernal is not that well known in the U.S., he has made quite a name for himself in the Spanish film community, with movies like Y Tu Mama Tambien, Bad Education, Motorcycle Diaries, and Babel. His quite diverse résumé makes Bernal a unique pick for this character, especially because he has been known to push boundaries in his previous roles.

20th Century Fox have unveiled Bernal (The Motorcycle Diaries, Bad Education) as their leading man in Zorro Reborn, which will see the masked outlaw dishing out vigilante justice in a completely new setting; a post-apocalyptic wasteland. Furthermore, the character of Zorro will be more of an anti-hero instead of a re-hash of his more typically clean-cut heroic persona. Lee Shipman and Brian McGreevy have teamed up with Glenn Gers (Fracture, Mad Money) to write the script, and producers are currently in search of a director to take on the project.
This news arguably perpetuates the notion that Hollywood have run out of ideas and are clutching at straws, however, if anyone can prove this point wrong it would be the likes of Bernal. He has had a long and diverse acting career, despite his relatively young age, and could have the experience and talent needed to turn a mediocre idea into an entertaining production. »

Mexican actor Gael Garcia Bernal will lead “Zorro Reborn”, 20th Century Fox’s futuristic reboot of the famed masked sword-wielding Spanish avenger.
The B-movie style adaptation will surprisingly not be set in Mexico or California and will instead adopt a desolate & post-apocalyptic setting as a ‘one-man vigilante force bent on revenge seeking’. Revenge on who or what or even what the catalyst was for Armageddon is anyone’s guess but we are told the proposed movie would be part Sergio Leone Western/part No Country For Old Men.
The rather desperate sounding tentpole comes from Lee Shipman and Brian McGreevy, the writers behind the Dracula re-imagining movie Harker at WB which Unknown director Jaume Collet-Serra is to helm; a King Arthur reboot titled Pendragon; and a re-imagining of The Count of Monte Cristo that would be set in the London underworld titled Once Upon A Time In Hell and it »

Gael Garcia Bernal never really struck us as a "tentpole guy." Having built his cred working with dudes like Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu ("Amores Perros"), Jim Jarmusch ("The Limits Of Control"), Alfonso Cuaron ("Y Tu Mama Tambien"), Walter Salles ("The Motorcycle Diaries"), Michel Gondry ("The Science Of Sleep"), Fernando Meirelles ("Blindness") and Pedro Almodovar ("Bad Education") he's earned a strong reputation as an actor of taste and talent. Even more, as a producer he's backed movies like "Voy a explotar" and "Sin Nombre." Sure, he's flirted with the mainstream in mind-boggling decisions to star in stuff like "Letters To Juliet" and the forthcoming "A Little Bit Of Heaven," and his his next move is no less baffling. Fox has tapped Bernal to take the lead in "Zorro Reborn" their futuristic reboot of the sword-wielding hero. If »

Gael García Bernal is keeping himself busy. According to Variety, García Bernal is attached to star in the futuristic Zorro reboot Zorro Reborn for 20th Century Fox. He's also to be featured opposite Will Ferrell and Diego Luna in Matt Piedmont's comedy Casa de mi Padre, and in Nicole Kassell's A Little Bit of Heaven, with Kate Hudson and Peter Dinklage. And that's not all: García Bernal is reportedly planning on making a documentary about immigration, and is attached to star as Panamanian boxer Roberto Duran in Jonathan Jakubowicz's Hands of Stone, opposite Al Pacino and Ryan Kwanten. Now, Variety explains that Zorro Reborn will be quite different from the Zorro of Tyrone Power, Frank Langella, Antonio Banderas, or Guy Williams. (Or George Hamilton, for that matter.) For starters, Zorro Reborn will not be set in Old California, then a part of Mexico. Nor will Zorro be a light-hearted sword fighter. »

Seemingly keeping up his steady pace of “one film every two-to-three years,” ScreenDaily (via DarkHorizons) reports that Pedro Almodóvar will once again employ the talents of his Talk to Her Star and Bad Education actor, Javier Cámara, for a new film: The Brief Lovers. The director’s sibling and producer, Agustin Almodóvar, spilled the beans on his Skin I Live In follow-up to a Spanish radio station within the past couple of days, saying that Lovers will be “a witty comedy, with very spicy dialogues and with a lot of fun and transgression.” Shooting will commence in the summer.
A bit of an interesting turn for Almodóvar, seeing as the Spaniard’s been out of the “pure” comedy realm for some time now — as in, for about two decades — so, please don’t stone me to death, I may end up looking forward to this purely on the grounds of »
