Kevin Smith originally considered doing a "Fletch" film in the late '90s. He met with star Chevy Chase, and the meeting did not go well. Unexpectedly, Smith's religious satire, Dogma (1999), came to occupy more of his time than even he expected to the point where he had to abandon the "Fletch 3" project.
