One word: KANE!
Xophianic10 February 2001
Along with Backlash, Fully Loaded and Summerslam (all year 2000), this was is one of my favorite WWF pay-per-views. Aside from Ivory vs Chyna (which was inexcusable crap), every match was solid and excellent. The Dudley Boyz vs Edge & Christian for the Tag Team Titles was very exciting and a good starter for the great pay-per-view. Kurt Angle vs Triple H for the WWF Title was very good, though it ended differently than I expected. Chris Benoit vs Chris Jericho for the Intercontinental Title was the best match of the night and definitely the best of the year so far.

And of course there was the main event, the Royal Rumble itself. It was very exciting and entertaining, with great action moments and very funny moments too. It featured the returns of the Big Show, Al Snow and Haku. It included funny moments from Drew Carey and the Honky Tonk Man. The overall Rumble was very good, with Stone Cold Steve Austin winning, of course.

Everybody knew Stone Cold was going to win, but the most impressive of the night was obviously Kane. Kane, who has always been one of my favorite wrestlers, was in the Royal Rumble for over an hour. He outlasted everybody and took out more wrestlers than anybody else did. Though he was one of the first ones out, he was also the last one eliminated, and it was almost disappointing to see Austin beat him. You've got to be impressed with Kane. It was truly his night.

The best Royal Rumble ever
rcuppen7918 April 2002
There couldn´t have been a better pay-per-view for the WWF to open the year 2001, because it is almost perfect. This pay-per-view contains 5 matches:

Women´s Championship Match: Ivory vs. Chyna The least interesting match of the evening. I´m not a favorite of women´s wrestling because most women in the WWF can´t wrestle all too well. Except for Chyna of course.

Tag-Team Championship Match: The Dudley Boyz vs. Edge & Christian

All I can say about this match-up is that they have had better ones in the past.

Intercontinental Championship Ladder Match: Chris Jericho vs. Chris Benoit

This was a good solid match with two of the better wrestlers within the WWF.

WWF Championship Match: Kurt Angle vs. Triple H This match-up could have been better, but it was entertaining.

30-man Royal Rumble Match The highlight of the evening. The best royal rumble ever, because there were so many great superstars involved in this match, such as Stone Cold Steve Austin, The Rock, The Undertaker, Kane, Rikishi, etc. It also contained the surprising return of the Big Show and some guest entrances from The Honky Tonk Man and Drew Carey. This certainly was a perfect rumble.

OH HELL YEAH! 2001 Royal Rumble is indeed one of the greatest, pro-wrestling PPVs, shows of all time! Grab some Bourbon and enjoyed.
ironhorse_iv24 March 2017
Warning: Spoilers
It's the Stone Cold truth! 2001 Royal Rumble was indeed, one of the best wrestling shows, I ever saw. The show at New Orleans was truly packed from the opening to the closing, with some of the greatest competitors that ever lived. It was a night worth remembering for. However, there were a few faults, I can't overlooked even for my nostalgia love for then WWF (WWE), like comedian, Drew Carrey awkward appearance in the Royal Rumble match, when he clearly isn't a fan of pro-wrestling, to a few too many filler vignettes, to unwatchable taboo Crash TV angles, that were a bit too dumb, over sexualized, or extremely violence for even my taste, at the time. While, some of the stuff, they did back then, was truly amazing. Rewatching it, there were a lot of things that now, really bugs me, like the chair shots to the head, or the overuse of blading. Nevertheless, the show is still watchable. Just note the cringe-worthy moments are just a little bit more noticeable, now. Some parts of the show, hasn't aged well. Let's start with the pre-show episode of Sunday Night Heat, in which, Lo Down (D'Lo Brown and Chaz) faced Kaientai (Taka Michinoku and Shoichi Funaki) in a tag team match for a chance to take part in the Royal Rumble. Not only, are the wrestlers playing politically incorrect somewhat racism stereotypical characters of Arabs & Japanese, but the whole angle of seeing, what tag team was more evil, is kinda cringe-worthy, when looking back at it; seeing how WWF Magazine also printed a poster to Kaientai destroying New York City with the World Trade Center on fire in order to make them look more popular. Yes, this really did happen, a few months, before 9/11 happen. Look it up. While, I can still get a laugh at how over the top, these acts, I still kinda think of it as offensive. Added to that trouble; it's funny that the match didn't really matter, as Drew Carey wound up being entered instead. It's so bad. Despite that, the preliminary matches on the card were a lot better. The opening match to the card, saw the Dudley Boyz (Buh Buh Ray & Devon Dudley) defend their tag team championship against Edge & Christian. It was a very nice opening, with both teams being red hot. However, it was a bit hard to watch, due to the concussion angle that probably can't be done, in today's wrestling world. Nevertheless, both teams put on a show that might be, overlook, by some fans, because the lack of table shots. This brings us to the Ladder match for the Intercontinental Championship between champion, Chris Benoit and challenger, Chris Jericho. What a great match with a great angle. Lots of sick looking bumps, using Benoit's head. Hard to watch at times, due to what happen to Benoit, later on, his career. Women Championship was next, with champion, Ivory facing challenger, Chyna with Right to Censor member, Stevie Richards at ringside. Alright match for the most part, but the whole broken neck angle doesn't make much sense, seeing how unrealistic fast, Chyna recovers from neck surgery in kayfabe terms. I know, it was done to make it, look like Ivory got a fighting chance, but gees louise; it kinda undermined Ivory's talent a bit here. It's sad, because I always found her to be a better wrestler than Chyna. The WWF Championship is next, with champion, Kurt Angle defending his belt against challenger, Triple H. As much as the match was great. I hatred the angle. It was so McMahon family driven. It was a bit awkward to see a heel vs heel match as one of the main event of the show. The fans didn't know, who to choose, here. In spite of that, the 30 Men Royal Rumble that follow that mess, was truly the right choice to end the show, with. Without spoiling it, too much, some of the best highlights from the match, has to be the hardcore rumble parts with Kane doing the most single eliminates in a Royal Rumble match in his career, the return of Honkytonk Man, and The Rock and Stone Cold Steve Austin facing down. It was amazing match, worthy to be talk about in the same astrosphere as the 1992's 'Royal Rumble', 1998's 'Royal Rumble' and others. It was one hell of a performance. Overall: Because how good, most of the matches, were. I have to say, Royal Rumble 2001 is a must watch PPV, I highly recommend seeing this show, despite some flaws.

What A Rumble
Terryfan7 March 2015
Warning: Spoilers
This is one of the best examples of how you do a pay per view and the Royal Rumble to boot.

2001 was a interesting year for Wrestling and when the WWF shows who was the superior Federation at the time.

It's one of my favorite PPV events so lets get on with the review

1.The Dudley Boyz vs Edge and Christian for the WWF Tag Team Championship.

Solid opener with two of the best tag teams in the WWF at the time and history both teams gave us a great showing on how to start up a show like the Royal Rumble with the Titles on the line as the Dudley Boyz went on to win the Tag Team Championship Rating: 8 out of 10

2.Chris Jericho vs Chris Beniot Ladder match for the WWF Intercontinental Championship.

This is one of my favorite matches in wrestling history and the feud that was had between Jericho and Beniot is one of the most heated ones in wrestling history as both men gave us a great wrestling ladder match and Chris Jericho would claim victory over his rival and the Intercontinental Title.

Rating: 9 out of 10

3.Ivory vs Chyna for the WWF Women's Championship. This match is still disappointing mostly because I hated Ivory and the group RTC looking back that pretty much killed the careers of all those who were in that group. Chyna ended up damaging her neck in this match and left her out of action.

Rating 3 out of 10.

4. Kurt Angle with Trish Stratus vs Triple H with Stephanie McMahon- Helmsley for the World Wrestling Federation Championship.

I enjoy the build up to the match and it help tells the story of this match between the two as they give us a good match over all Part of the match was build up because of the feud between Trish and Stephanie and it left Triple H and Kurt Angle in the middle of it all while they fight for the WWF Title. With Stone Cold Steve Austin getting into the middle of the match.

Rating 8 out of 10

5. The Royal Rumble Match

This Rumble feature two records that were set this very night with Kane eliminating a record setting 11 people in the match and Stone Cold Steve Austin becoming the first man to win three Royal Rumble Matches. This match had everything you would want in a Royal Rumble match and then some.

Rating 9 out of 10

Overall this Royal Rumble is a strong show and had a epic showing over all if you love old WWF this is your show.

I give WWF Royal Rumble 2001 an 8 out of 10

Possibly The Best RR PPV Ever!!

Warning: Spoilers
Royal Rumble 2001 Thoughts

Royal Rumble 2001 was the 14th annual Royal Rumble PPV event produced by the WWE. The show took place on January 21, 2001 at the New Orleans Arena in New Orleans, Louisiana. Attendence was said to be at 17,137 with buyrate being 625,000. With all the stacked talent and great stories, this made it the 3rd highest paid Rumble in WWE history.

5 matches took place on the main card with the main event being the Royal Rumble where the winner would headline the main event against the world champion. We also had one of the best single ladder matches in WWE history for the Intercontinental Championship and 2 other great matches which all featured future legends.

The Good - Best Match tonight unfortunately wasn't the royal rumble match but the ladder match for the Intercontinental Championship. Chris Jericho vs. Chris Benoit was a huge highlight of both superstar's careers. The crowd was hot and we got some great spots delivered between the duo. The rumble match was also terrific overall and Kane looked like an amazing monster in that ring. This Rumble right here made him one of the best rumble Performers of all time. Austin winning did set up something good in the future though that would be on the next PPV. I also like to mention the opening being a great opener for the show and a very exciting tag team match.

The Meh - I thought the WWF Championship match was really good but one small tiny complaint was definitely it being a bit too slow paced. Finish was also a bit too cheap with Austin getting involved.

The Bad - The only negative I have of this show was the Women's Championship match being a stupid finish. The set up for the future WrestleMania match could have been done on regular TV. Match wasn't really anything.

Overall - An outstanding Royal Rumble PPV event. Build up to WrestleMania started well and we all know how well it ended being the start 2001. Again outstanding show and highly recommended again.

Score - 9 out of 10: Awesome

0 = Terrible : 1 = Bad/Lackluster : 2 = Decent : 3 = Good : 4 = Awesome : 5 = One of the Best of all Time

1. The Dudley Boyz vs. Edge & Christian: WWF Tag Team Championship - 3.5/5

2. Chris Jericho vs. Chris Benoit: WWF Intercontinental Championship (Ladder Match) - 4.5/5

3. Chyna vs. Ivory: WWF Women's Championship - 1/5

4. Kurt Angle vs. Triple H: WWF Championship - 3.5/5

5. 30-Man Royal Rumble - 4/5

Best Match - Chris Jericho vs. Chris Benoit

Worst Match - Chyna vs. Ivory

Most Memorable Moment - Rock & Austin tease. We all saw what was coming.

Top 5 Performers

1. Kane - Outstanding Performance

2. Chris Jericho - Outstanding Performance

3. Rock - Outstanding Performance

4. Stone Cold - Outstanding Performance

5. Chris Benoit - Outstanding Performance.

Kane Puts on A Legendary Royal Rumble Performance
jeremycrimsonfox5 February 2023
Taking place in the New Orleans Arena in New Orleans, Louisiana, WWF Royal Rumble 2001 is the 14th running of the PPV event, named after its main event, and the second-to-last one before WWF was forced to change its name to WWE. As a result, this can be considered the final Royal Rumble of the Attitude Era by many fans.

Starting with a match between The Dudley Boyz and the team of Edge and Christian for the WWF Tag Team Championship, the main PPV has four matches, all being for certain championship belts, before the Royal Rumble, making it a total of five matches (six if one decides to count the tag team match on the Sunday Night Heat that took place beforehand). The best match was the ladder match for the WWF Intercontinental Championship between Chris Jericho and Chris Benoit since the two showed some skill and made the match brutal using a steel chair and the ladder as weapons, but the worst I have to say is the WWF Women's Championship between Ivory and Chyna, as it was so bad due to its length and its end, but we all know the Royal Rumble is the match we want to watch, and this is one of the best ones the company had. One of the competitors allowed in is comedian and future WWE Hall of Famer and Price is Right host Drew Carey, which is a neat way to add a comedic moment when Kane comes in, eliminating himself after Raven comes in and saves him from a chokeslam with a kendo stick attack, although Kane also gets another Royal Rumble moment to cement his legacy as a monster by easily taking out Honky Tonk Man with his own guitar just as he enters and he could have won if not for Stone Cold Steve Austin (although he lasted long enough to be eliminated last). But still, a great PPV.

not bad
ricky_says_hi18 August 2009
Warning: Spoilers
2001 definitely was the best year for WWF and its first PPV starts things off nicely.

TAG TEAM TITLE MATCH: Dudleys against Edge and Christian a pretty good opener, the Dudleys are always great to watch but there wasn't much coming from Edge and Christian. there didn't seem to be any real threat but it was still pretty solid. lol when the two canucks try to hit D-Von on either side of the head with two steel chairs, he ducks and they bash off each other. Dudleys get a 3-D for the win. 7/10 INTERCONTINENTAL TITLE MATCH - LADDER: Chris Jericho vs Chris Benoit most action packed match of the night with both men using the ladder and other weapons. i think it was the longest match, Benoit tried a suicide dive but got whacked with a chair from Y2J, Jericho put him in the walls of Jericho while they were both on top of the ladder. Benoit tried a diving headbutt but missed and bounced his head off the mat. Jericho hit him in the back with a steel chair and caused him to flop out of the ring. Jericho climbs the ladder and gets the title belt. 9/10 WOMEN'S CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH: Ivory vs Chyna this goes to prove that Chyna shouldn't wrestle women. it's a pretty one sided match with Chyna tossing Ivory around the ring like a rag doll and having fun with her outside the ring. she goes back inside and tries a handspring back elbow but injures her neck, allowing Ivory to climb on top of her and get the pin. 5/10 WWF CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH: Kurt Angle w/Trish Stratus vs Triple H w/Stephanie McMahon-Helmsley pretty good bout between two good wrestlers. Triple H of course can't stick to the rules for long and has Stephanie distract the referee so he can hit Kurt's ankle with a steel chair. Kurt gets the upper hand in the middle of the match and Stephanie's voice as she cheers on her husband is like nails on a blackboard. The game cheats again by using the ropes for leverage as he puts Kurt in an Indian deathlock. Trish breaks the hold and Stephanie slaps her. the two have a catfight and Vince comes down to separate them and has to carry Trish over his shoulder while Stephanie chases after them. the ref gets knocked out so he can't count to 3 when Triple H lands the pedigree. Stone Cold comes out and attacks Triple H. Kurt and the referee come round and Kurt gets the pin. 8/10 ROYAL RUMBLE MATCH: It started with the Hardy Boyz double teaming Bull Buchanan and Farooq but eliminating each other with a surprise appearance from Drew Carey. Kane dominates the match but it becomes hardcore as Raven, Al Snow and Steve Blackman bring weapons. The Honky Tonk Man shows up, sings his song and gets whacked over the head with his guitar by Kane. The Rock shows up and so does Big Show and gets eliminated early, he chokeslams Rock through the announce table in revenge. Undertaker comes in and him and Kane clear house. poor Scotty 2 Hotty has to enter alone with both of them. Stone Cold arrives but gets ambushed by Triple H before he can enter the ring. The One Billy Gunn, Haku and Rikishi enter and the final 4 is Stone Cold, Rock, Billy and Kane. Stone Cold wins and celebrates with beer. it would have been better if Billy or the Rock had won because Stone Cold was way overrated at this time. 8/10

Royal Rumble 2001
amanwhorocks4 May 2015
Warning: Spoilers
1. WWF Tag Team TItle Match: Dudley Boyz Vs. Champs: Edge & Christian - New tag champs. Buh Buh, s*it his pants after they won, when he screamed. 7/10

2. WWF Intercontinental Title Match: Chris Jericho Vs. Champ:Chris Benoit - Octopus on the ladder by Jericho was awesome! Benoit's head butt from the top of the ladder! Jericho then graped the belt. 9.5/10

3. WWF Women's Title Match: Chyna Vs. Champ-Ivory - Great, on standards of women matches. Chyna "hurt" her neck and Ivory give hand over her and got the pin. 7.5/10

4. WWF World Heavyweight Title Match: Triple H Vs. Champ-Kurt Angle - Angle one more time retained, cuz Austin ruined the Game with Stunner. 8/10

5. Royal Rumble Match - Stone cold was the winner and I have no problem with that, but that booking held under the midcarders, like Raven/Saturn and the others that deserved more place there. :-/ And Drew Berryshouldn't be there for sure. 7/10

Still Peak "Attitude Era"--Which Will Determine Your Enjoyment
zkonedog19 February 2022
As with all the post-Wrestlemania 2000 events up to and through this one, Royal Rumble 2001 is defined more by "attitude" than "talent". Your overall enjoyment of that atmosphere will almost exclusively determine your ranking of this PPV.

Some further thoughts...

-The only reason I care about the Dudley Boyz is their table-bashing antics. The duo in a straight tag match? Ugh.

-Jericho vs. Benoit should be iconic, but to me those were always just two above-average (but no more) talents that were elevated due to the lack of performers in this era.

-What a sham the actual rumble is. Drew Carey? Give me a break. Half the guys entering the ring are absolute nobodies, and the ending is as predictable as the event seems long. Opportunities actually abounded for interesting conclusions, but all were discarded in favor of the safe choice.

-Angle/HHH was clearly the best match on this card--and even that essentially evolved into a Trish/Stephanie catfight, as per the nature of the business at this time.

Clearly, I am not an Attitude Era fan. If you are, your ranking will likely be far higher. But I view such antics as distractions from an enormous talent issue and little more.

Stone Cold then levelled Kane with 3 chairshots and clotheslined him over the top rope. Winner: Stone Cold Steve Austin

A pritty good PPV. This derserves a B+ (Drew Carrey in the Royal Rumble, I don't think so)

Stone Cold Stone Cold!!!
evilman5748 July 2004
Warning: Spoilers
Royal Rumble 2001 was my first PPV event. I ordered it for the Ladder Match and Rumble match only. And those were the only matches that impressed me.

SPOILERS AHEAD!!!!

Tag Team Titles: Dudley Boyz def Edge and Christian. Good match to start things off.

Ladder Match for the Interconitnental Championship: Chris Jericho vs Chris Benoit. Best match of the night. I was surprised that Jericho won. Watch the part where Benoit does a suicide dive out of the ring and Jericho puts a steel chair right into his head. Ouch!

Womens Championship: Ivory def Chyna. Zzzzzzzzzzzzzz. Bad acting by Chyna

WWF Championship: Kurt Angle def Triple H. Lots of people thought Hunter could pull this off for some reason. Stone Cold interferes and Angle retains his title.

Royal Rumble Match: Stone Cold wins by last eliminating Kane. I had my money on Stone Cold and he won it for the 3rd time. Which has not been beaten. Great match with strong performances by. Kane, The Rock, Undertaker, and Rikishi. Drew Carey was pretty funny getting his ass saved by Raven from Kane. Returns of the Big Show and Haku. All of this made this a pretty good Rumble match.

8 out of 10.

Probably the best Royal Rumble yet!
TreyJ0210 February 2001
The 2001 Royal Rumble was perhaps the greatest ever, most certainly better than the 2000 Royal Rumble. There were four matches, and then the actual Royal Rumble itself. The first match was for the Tag Team Championship, with champions Edge and Christian taking on the Dudley Boyz. After a huge upset by Edge and Christian, Buh Buh Ray Dudley and D-Von Dudley captured the Tag Team gold. The second match was for the Intercontinental Championship, in which Chris Jericho and Chris Benoit battled it out in a Ladder Match. Jericho won that match, and became the new Intercontinental Champion. The next match was for the Women's Championship, and Chyna made her return to battle the champ Ivory. After a freak mishap and an injured Chyna, Ivory was able to steal a win and retain the title. Chyna was rushed by medical personnel out of the ring, with Billy Gunn at her side. The fourth match was for the WWF Championship, Kurt Angle with Trish Stratus taking on the challenger Triple H with Stephanie McMahon Helmsley. After a cat fight between Trish and Stephanie, and Vince McMahon carrying the two out of the ring, and Stone Cold Steve Austin's interference, Kurt Angle was able to score a pin and retain the title once again. The main event was of course the Royal Rumble match. It was made up of 30 superstars, including the Hardy Boyz, Bull Buchanan, Hardcore Holly, Kane, Rikishi, Tazz, the Acolytes, Test, Steve Blackman, Billy Gunn, The Undertaker, Stone Cold Steve Austin, The Rock, and even Drew Carey among others. The big suprise was perhaps the return of The Honkytonk Man, Haku, and The Big Show. The winner was Stone Cold Steve Austin who defeated Kane, and will go on to WrestleMania XVII to face Kurt Angle for the World Wrestling Federation Championship. If you have a chance to catch this event, it's definately a must see.
