A fantastic racing simulator
7 September 2016 | by (Canberra, Australia) – See all my reviews

I will admit that I do not own a PlayStation 2 console nor do I own any of the Sony PlayStation consoles, and for that very fact, I have not completed the game.

To do my critiquing I will start with the bad, then finish with the good.

The Bad: 1. No car damage. As a realistic driving simulator, it should include car damage into the game. 2. The worst part of this game is that it is only available for the PlayStation 2, a console I do not own nor ever owned. To add insult to injury, getting a new console requires more physical space and can be very expensive. Granted, it would not be expensive to get a PlayStation 2 console now from a secondhand store, but at the time it was brand new, that is an inconvenience you had to deal with. Even worse, you are not able to play a great game just because you do not have the console it is only available on.

The Good: 1. Superb gameplay. The gameplay has a very realistic feel to it, and that is the biggest reason why Gran Turismo is the greatest racing simulator of all time. 2. A great soundtrack, both menu and in-game. The menu music, courtesy of Isamu Ohira, never disappoints. The in-game music, with the licenced music likes of Feeder, Overseer, Ash, Grand Theft Audio, Muse and Death in Vegas, and original music, courtesy of Daiki Kasho. It has a nice balance of licenced and original in-game music. Because I live in Australia, the licenced artists I listed are from the PAL version, the version used in my country. The in-game music gets me hooked into playing the game like no racing game has ever done to me, and that is a good thing, and one of the reasons why Gran Turismo is the greatest racing simulation franchise in existence. 3. The rally tracks give it some variety. Another reason why Gran Turismo is the greatest racing simulation franchise in existence is that it has a good balance of tarmac tracks and dirt tracks, a feature a lot of racing games lack. 4. Phenomenal intro to the game. The beginning of the intro felt like a movie. 5. The game has so much depth to it. This is one of the reasons why I love the Gran Turismo franchise. The creator, Kazunori Yamauchi, has a deep love for motor vehicles. It is also a good game to get into the motor vehicle industry. 6. The graphics were amazing for its time, but it still looks good to this day. 7. A great arcade mode, a good mode to play in case you get bored of Gran Turismo Mode.

Overall, Gran Turismo 3: A-spec is a exceptional racing simulator, and is arguably the best game in the franchise. I will say I started to develop a preference for Sony over Microsoft for that very video game franchise, whilst its Microsoft equivalent, Forza Motorsport, is inferior, in my opinion. That does not mean that Forza Motorsport is a bad franchise, far from it, I just think it lacks the uniqueness that Gran Turismo has.
