Amazingly quirky and different
planktonrules3 November 2007
A few years before JUMP TOMORROW was filmed, the same leading man (Tunde Adebimpe) starred in a shorter version of this script entitled "Jorge". I have not seen the original film, so I cannot base my review on it but I was so taken by JUMP TOMORROW that I'm going to try to find a copy of this 30 minute short.

Adebimpe very ably plays a Nigerian-American (George) who is a very odd man, indeed and I loved his low-key performance. In many ways he's a total geek and it's nice to finally see a Black nerd in a film who is NOT "Steve Urkel"! During most of the film, George is very quiet and shy--part of which is due to his introverted personality and part is due to his lack of enthusiasm for a pending arranged marriage. This film is about his trek from home to Niagra Falls to be wed.

Along the way, he meets up with a very strange man (Gerard) who is suicidal and desperately in need of a friend. While George is in a hurry to get to his wedding, he is too decent a man to leave Gerard in his emotional condition. So, they travel together cross country to the wedding and they both become very unlikely friends.

There's MUCH more to this movie that this--including a tough to believe but nice romance that occurs between George and a new lady--again, someone who seems so unlike George in almost every way. While this aspect of the film is a tad predictable, the performances and dialog are so fresh and unusual that the film held my interest throughout. As a result, I strongly recommend you see this romantic-comedy if you are looking for something different from the usual Hollywood offerings.

Carpe Diem!
=G=18 September 2003
"Jump Tomorrow", which roughly translates to "carpe diem", is a romcom indie which creates an unlikely duo and then sees if it can get them together against all odds. He's big, black, socially inept, and about to be married. She's petite, Latin, fiery, and taking her boyfriend home to mom. On the downside, this film is a slow starter with a low budget and a distinct absence of star power and tinselization. On the upside, it is crisp, creative, coherent and imbued with subtle warmth and charm. Those in the mood for some low cal but tasty romcom fare might want to give this little semiprecious "gem" a chance. (B)

Moments and love that's meant to be for two (be-spectacled) persons - chance and coincidences
ruby_fff11 October 2004
There's actually a French-Canadian film titled "Chance or Coincidence" aka Hasards ou Coincidences (1998), written and directed by Claude Lelouch (of "A Man and A Woman" 1966, "Les Miserables" 1995) with the lead character played by his partner Alessandra Martines. It may be Lelouch's usual esoteric charming style, yet it's an endearing film with layers of imaginative drama, dashes of life philosophy, the eternal man & woman relationships, 'travelogue' cinematography and jazzy music.

"Jump Tomorrow," written and directed by Joel Hopkins (his debut feature 2001), has all the above ingredients at an easy attainable level: I really like the music choices incorporated into this light and fanciful road movie, how the different vignettes somehow linked by chance and coincidences. It's an endearing romantic comedy. The choreographed impromptu moments, of 'ladybug' love a-flourishing so naturally - even the wedding ceremony scene, how the groom and his bride confessed and happily trotted out the church leaving the congregation still seated in awe (dumbfounded). The whole 97 mins. just flow so congruently together. Conflict/arguments, second thoughts, pause/rethinks, dance a little, eat & drink some, more energetic dance, rendezvous in quietness, change of minds, lost and found, split of hearts, 2 hearts unite, sharing a phone booth in the rain. So charmingly enjoyable. There is subtle poetry in the framing of shots/angles, the repeat of symbolic imagery here and there.

The cast is marvelous: Tunde Adebimpe is George (Jorge) - don't let his looks or deadpan face/voice fool you, what an interesting central character. Natalia Verbeke is Alicia - the object of the opposite attraction, ladybug enchanted. Hippolyte Girardot is Gerard - the indispensable 'road shadow/angel' to George, prompting/rescuing George in his heart's pursuit. James Wilby is Nathan (companion to Alicia) - practically a cameo role, poking fun at himself - a lax and disheveled Wilby we seldom get to see. Brief but welcoming: Abiola Abrams is Sophie, George's (Spanish) understanding fiancée. Patricia Mauceri is Consuelo, Alicia's (lively) widowed mother. Gene Ruffini is the wistful (deafly) observant 'old man' of Consuelo's household.

I caught the film on cable (Encore) Love Stories channel, and repeatedly enjoyed it as it's shown again. It's also available on DVD. The film was an expanded version of a 30 mins. B/W short that Hopkins made in 1998. Perhaps my thorough enjoyment of "Jump Tomorrow" is that I was unaware of the short (which had rave reviews). If you feel like a dose of fanciful romantic (road) story for a relaxing relish, check out "Jump Tomorrow."

An overlooked gem
kylopod30 October 2005
My first viewing of "Jump Tomorrow" was a rare instance when I knew I was going to love a film as soon as I saw the first shot, which depicts nothing more unusual than a bespectacled man being fitted into a suit. From the man's stiff posture and timid face it is obvious that he's very shy and passive. I immediately realized that I was seeing a good actor who was able to suggest an entire personality while hardly doing anything, indeed barely moving at all.

The name of the actor is Tunde Adebimpe, and I am astonished that he is not more famous. Apparently, this is one of the only films he's ever acted in, other than the short college film it's based on, in which he played the same character. Primarily, he's an animator rather than an actor. But the performance he gives in this film is nothing short of remarkable. And it is in the course of an extremely creative and quirky little movie that brings surprising life to an old formula.

The plot is simple: George, an American from a Nigerian immigrant family, is about to marry a childhood friend, and on the way to the wedding he falls for a Spanish woman, Alicia. If that premise sounds hopelessly familiar, the movie finds just about every possible way to make it seem fresh and original. While the beginning and end stick pretty closely to the conventions of the genre, the events in between manage to take some very interesting turns. The film is like one of those magical rooms that's much larger on the inside than on the outside.

When you hear the premise you might be led to assume, as I first did, that this is merely another ethnic comedy about someone who's expected to marry within the culture but ends up falling for someone of another ethnicity and at first the family objects, but eventually everyone comes around and learns a valuable lesson about cultural tolerance. While some of those films are enjoyable in their way, this patronizing approach is all too common in the movies, where the formula is always about whether some "exotic" culture is willing to adapt to Western norms that are inevitably deemed superior. Thankfully, "Jump Tomorrow" is not in that tradition at all. In fact, it deals surprisingly little with ethnicity, even though all the major characters are either non-white or non-American. By the middle of the film, you're likely to forget that it's even about an interracial relationship, because that point is never dwelt upon. George's family naturally expects him to marry the woman he grew up with, and the reason he's going along with their plans has nothing to do with some antiquated family betrothal custom: it is simply because he's such a passive and accepting individual.

Adebimpe plays the character to such perfection that some of the movie's laughs come simply from the nuances of his voice and gestures. His lines reflect an understanding of these subtle traits, as when he casually observes that "My face doesn't make sense without glasses." Comedy usually depends on frustrating a character's expectations, and "Jump Tomorrow" is no exception. I just don't believe I've ever seen in any other comedy a character quite like George, who wants nothing more than to blend in and be invisible, to avoid making waves. But he's inevitably humiliated in a hilarious sequence involving a woman named Heather Leather (the name still cracks me up), in an ill-advised scheme by his friend Gerard to make Alicia jealous. The event takes place at a hotel with a love motif and a variety of strange furniture, including a bathtub in the form of giant champagne glass. Without ever quite descending into surrealism, these scenes play like a tribute to several comic filmmakers from Blake Edwards to Woody Allen.

But George has a very basic dignity that grows on you as the film progresses. Gerard has his own problems, and indeed the movie's title refers to George's words when talking his friend out of suicide. Gerard calls it "the best talk-down speech I've ever heard," and I'd have to agree.

As in most romantic comedies, the rival love interest is a douche bag. But in "Jump Tomorrow," even this character is given so many quirky and eccentric traits that he seems an original creation. He's a British professor who practices taekwondo in the rain, gives Alicia an engagement ring made of bone, and refers to her family as "fascinating." We are tempted to wonder what she, a hopeless romantic, sees in him. That is a question we've all asked many times, both about movies and about real life.

At one point, Gerard gets into an argument with the professor over whether the French language is obsolete. This is one of many amusing scenes that deal with the theme of language differences. In an attempt to impress Alicia, George tries to learn Spanish by listening to travel audio-cassettes picked up at a local convenience store and by watching Spanish soap operas. Of course, he never gains more than a beginner's proficiency in the language, but in his fantasies he can speak the language fluently. The movie spoofs Spanish soaps in a handful of scenes in which he imagines himself as a character in one of these shows. Then there is Alicia's deaf-mute grandfather who takes an immediate liking to George, giving a wonderful performance without words and helping to highlight the movie's theme that commonality transcends language. "Jump Tomorrow" is a small masterpiece that I have made it my mission to make known to other movie lovers.

A thoroughly nice film – but I'm not 100% sure that's a good thing
bob the moo1 September 2003
George is a young Nigerian American who is due to get married to Sophie, who is coming from Nigeria. George is one day late to pick her up from the airport and she has gone ahead to Niagara Falls for their wedding. George bumps into Gerard, who is on the point of suicide from unreturned love, and the pair travel up to Niagara Falls. On the way George meets Alicia, herself in a relationship and he begins to fall for her.

Extended from a short I haven't yet seen (Jorge) this film attracted me as it was part of a season of `indie' films and shorts being shown on channel 4. From the opening scenes it was apparent that this film had a nicely comic tone to it that was amusing. The plot is also `nice', a romance without ever getting too heavy or too sickly sweet. The comic feel running through the film keeps it amusing even when nothing much happens.

The film's weakness is that it is clearly made by a director of shorts. The feel of the film is like that of many short films – development is not the key and it assumes we sort of know the characters well enough after only a few minutes. Similarly the film feels very episodic – the scenes don't flow into each other but feel more like they are very distinct and separate events. However that said the film is still entertaining but it didn't give me more as the film went on – rather just more of the same. I enjoyed the film but it's hard to praise it simply because it doesn't excel itself in any one area but drifts along amiably enough.

Part of the reason I enjoyed the film was a great lead by Adebimpe, who fits the role like a glove! He is suitably uptight and is very good as George. Verbeke's Alicia is not as good but is `nice'. Girardot is great fun and really gives the film some energy.

Overall I enjoyed this film and many others will as long as you're in the mood for something slight. If you expect something more substantial then you may be disappointed as this really is a film with all the qualities of a short – in some cases this is good and in others it is a weakness. Generally the film was `nice', I neither loved nor hated it but did enjoy it – I just can't find a better way of putting it as I did think it was remarkably middle of the road in many regards.

A small film, very very small, but cute
Chimale10255 May 2004
This is a very "indie" looking "independent film. Hollywood should be making more films with themes like this. It's sweet, cute and nice, but I was expecting a little more from it after having seen the more evocative short subject on which it was based. It suffers from "indieitis". Like a lot of small films it isn't developed enough to fill its length. One complaint I have about "independent" film is that the films have a very low "viewability" factor. Whether it's lousy acting, poor storytelling, pathetically trendy or arty camera work (like Waydowntown) or just the "director's" self important view of the world, I just wish film schools would just disappear from the face of the planet. This film suffers from the poorly chosen overused pop music score. Most of the music has been overplayed in commercials and other disasters like "Van Wilder". Its odd to say that despite a lot of huge faults I liked this film. I just wish more thought had been put into its conception. Its a charming premise, lighter than air, but as anyone who truly appreciates a good romantic comedy knows, they are harder to make well than almost any other Genre.

Amazing Film!
sandletting_go16 March 2006
This is what a genuine love story should be all about. I was amazed I had never heard of this film and how truly good it is. The writing, directing and acting are truly superb. All the characters are likable, except the obvious ones, and one seems to form a bond with them. Whether it be true friendship, love, emotions, feelings... well, this film has it all. There is great chemistry between Adebimpe and Verbeke. Girardot serves as a dysfunctional guardian angel to Adebimpe and as comic relief in scenes where there is supposed to be some tension. Although, this film is completely hilarious. Love may not be a science, but it is honestly such a complex subject to understand. Just go with the flow and watch this excellent film.

Funny little film: quite funny but a little film
vostf10 September 2001
Among the good ideas that make that film funny I would pick the one with 'Jorge' embodying a true macho in some telenovela. I think this is definitely the most effective dodge of Jump Tomorrow. Some others are quite funny too (even the cliché crazy Frenchy). But it lacks rhythm on the whole. It's like your hear a good joke, call a buddy to tell it and then the next joke is just cooking.

Funny but it could have been directed a lot more lively.

Jump Tomorrow: charming and delightful
scarletflicker17 April 2005
I was charmed by the short, Jorge, taped it and saw it many times. I was teaching film, and used it in class to exemplify a well-made, comic and moving short film. Clicking around on digital TV, I was happy to find myself watching the same delightful, bewildered man on his further adventures.

I liked Jump Tomorrow enormously, found it touching and laugh-out-loud funny. Tunde Adepimbe has charisma even when he's struck dumb. All the characters are warm and natural, and the script allows for an impromptu feel, even when it's heading toward a well-structured conclusion. A graceful good-hearted road movie. Thank heaven for independent films. I look forward to Joel Hopkins' future work with great anticipation!

Run of the mill indie
JohnSeal23 December 2003
At the risk of sounding like an old grouch, I found Jump Tomorrow to be an incredibly predictable and lightweight rom com. Director Joel Hopkins has a decent eye (witness the early scenes at the loft party), but his screenplay is extremely undernourished and suffers from indie film disease. Yes, it's another film where a group of wacky fish out of water eat, dance, fall in love, and overcome adversity together, all to another fairly generic soundtrack of alterna rock (plus John Lennon's Instant Karma). The film even has the temerity to rip off the big scene from Francois Ozon's Water Drops On Burning Rocks. It's all quite likable, but comfortably unambitious.

Delightful, Surprising Sweet Road Trip
noralee6 December 2005
"Jump Tomorrow" is a delightful, surprising sweet road trip of a movie.

Very similar in tone to one of my little favorites, "The Daytrippers," it brings together a quirky group of people in a concentrated period of time for a romantic quest. The fresh-faced (though mostly experienced), multi-cultural cast is absolutely disarming, and their cultural variety is integrated into the script very nicely.

Very amusing is the cute but restrained use of fantasy; the continuing technique of inner thoughts revealed as dreams in a Spanish telenovella is very original.

The song selection is selectively classic rock.

I could very well adopt the theme in my personal life: hey, you can always jump tomorrow!

Too quirky for its own good
cricketbat16 August 2018
While the makers of Jump Tomorrow had good intentions, I'm sure, the humor and heart of this movie seem to fall flat. A few annoying characters seemed to hog the spotlight and dialogue, leaving the characters I found interesting in the dust. It's too quirky for its own good.

A Perfect 'Indie' Date Movie
gkleinman26 July 2001
Jump Tomorrow is one of those smart and funny films you just can't help but like. A first time effort from writer/director Joel Hopkins , Jump Tomorrow is a fresh breath of air and an absolute relief from the bevy of re-hashed romantic comedies which find their way into theaters. At the center of Jump Tomorrow is George (portrayed by first time star Tunde Adebimpe), a very serious, composed, and all too contained Nigerian. At times George reminds me of Woody Allen or M. Hulot as he awkwardly stumbles through his life on a journey to the inevitable. But it's the journey that has an impact on George and watching that change is both humorous and entertaining.

Joel Hopkins has a lot of the same qualities as director Wes Anderson (who directed the fantabulous Rushmore) - he has a sense of framing, music and pacing that is funny, but not at the expense of the characters. Over the course of the movie you really get to know and like these characters, feel for their struggle and can revel in their personal triumphs. It's rare that you get that from a Romantic Comedy, and for that I'd definitely recommend Jump Tomorrow. Think of it as the perfect 'indie' date movie!

god speed British Airways
cass_meyer16 February 2004
much like watching the fax machine assault in the movie 'office space' there are moments in this movie when you too can agree you have a "milton in your work". i can't express how much this movie should be explored. there are times you want to stand up and say "yeah! you figured it out...this is exactly how i've been feeling!!! "........then you realize you're sitting in coach on a return flight home from british airways.

overlooked nugget of a film
szirtest21 February 2002
This is a little nugget of a film pretty much overlooked by the world. It's a very simple film but does a rare thing these days - appeal to the heart with its honesty and sincerity. It's very well written, amusing, entertaining and in the end you really care about the characters.

Warm and life affirming.

Excellent Acting by an outstanding group of unknowns!!!!
dbluebarry226 February 2001
This is a magnificent reminder of what movies can be(small budget), in this day and age of the big budget movies. In other words, as long as their is a wonderful story to be told, there doesn't have to be big name actors or directors to tell it well!!! The story along with the acting in this movie is done magnificently, particularly with attention to every small detail. I laughed throughout the movie and enjoyed even the smallest parts i.e. (Emcee at the Love Lodge!!!!), I cracked up. Enough said, as I do not want to give much about the plot away except to say that I defy anyone that doesn't like romantic comedies NOT to like this movie.

Try This At Home . It`s Perfect
Theo Robertson13 August 2003
Warning: Spoilers
!!!! POSSIBLE SPOILER !!!!!

I do concede there is a market for romantic comedies , quirky road movies and independant features and I admit that I can take or leave any of these genres but I wasn`t too impressed with JUMP TOMORROW which iis an amalgam of all three genres . I did give it a chance and was slightly taken with the line dancing sequence but my interest waned towards the end so much that I found myself turning off the sound of the TV and playing music which is something I often do when I`m bored . So there I was listening to a compilation tape of The The while watching the TV with the sound turned off and just as JUMP TOMORROW reached its end the The The 1982 track Perfect started and I can`t hammer home enough how this song goes perfectly ( ! ) with the finale of JUMP TOMORROW . Try this at home , play Perfect by The The so that the track matches the last three minutes of JUMP TOMORROW where the Nigerian man and the latino girl are in the booth overlooking the massive waterfalls . It`s uncanny

It`s been mentioned that if you listen to Pink Floyd`s Dark Side Of The Moon while watching THE WIZARD OF OZ the lyrics match what`s on screen . I don`t know if that`s true or not but Perfect and the final minutes of JUMP TOMORROW do go together

I am not so all alone here after all!!!!
Ms. V30 July 2001
Warning: Spoilers
***SPOILERS*** ***SPOILERS*** Yes, I knew Jump Tomorrow was going to be a film worth seeing going into the theater yesterday per the reviews I had read on it prior. However, once I arrived at the theater, I realized just how true those movie reviews were.

Underrated!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This was, doubtlessly, one of the most funnest films I have seen in quite sometime. From the moment I was seated in my chair, I was up and running, cheering, laughing, ranting out LOUD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

From top-to-bottom, this film was a surefire winner!!!!!

I truly enjoyed Tunde Adebimpe in a star-making turn as George, the Nigerian-American man on the verge of his arranged marriage to a young woman (who herself is actually beautiful) from his native country. When she comes through a day early to arrive for their wedding, and George misses her at the airport, that's when the fun starts.

In running into a beautiful Latina woman named Alicia (Natalia Verbeke, who looks like someone who works in my building!!!), George is instantly smitten by her stunning beauty. Dazed, George then meets a jilted Frenchman named Gerard (Hippolyte Girardot) who is trying to hard to look for love. But sees it nonetheless in George's eyes once they end up at a party Alicia inadvertently invited George to--and George turns around and asks Gerard to accompany him. From there, everything is crazy in this fun-filled comedy.

Not only is this film a romantic comedy, but a road-trip movie as well, giving you two films in one. Not only did I find this film to be a refreshing breath of fresh air, but I also loved the ambiance and the sanitariness of it all: the film had something of a late 1960s-early 1970s feel to it and the music instigated the motiff as it sounded as from that period as well, which only led to its ensuing charm. All though the flick, although it was obvious George--who later called himself Jorge (his name in Spanish)--was engaged and Alicia had a boyfriend she clearly did entirely like (James Wilby, also well-done as an egotistical, self-absorbed dude), no questions those two were destined to be together.

It was great to see George blossom throughout the course of the film from the stiff, uptight sort he was at the onset. That is a credit I give to Adebimpe's work, which reminded me of a quiet, understated dignity harking back to Sidney Poitier of the late 1960s-early 1970s. Adebimpe's bespectacled look also served him well. I can see him being leading man material for someone looking for a new millennium spin on the brand of decorum Sidney used to bring to his work during his heydey.

I also enjoyed Verbeke in her leading lady role as Alicia. She also wore glasses, but in going with contacts on ocassion in the film, she also presented a certain type of rawness which only added to George's burning desire for her. May she be a mami chula who deservingly gets her choice calls in the time to come.

As for Girardot, may he be able to somehow get some supprting actor accolades for his part in this one. As with the hero and heroine, who also were cheering for him because he was so endearing, you wanted him to win!!!!

All-in-all, a fine job out by rookie writer/director James Hopkins. If this is an indication of things to come from this fine man, then I predict he will have a long, productively satisfying career. This film was, indeed, a refreshing breath of fresh air. In fact, I loved it so much...I'm already ready for the DVD!!!!! And with a rating of 8.3 in 39 imdb votes before I casted my 10, I am glad to see this film is having the effect it is!!!! I an recommending this one to anyone and anybody who likes movies as much as I do!!!! Already one of my all-time favorites AFTER ONE VIEWING!!!!!!!!!!

Why did I like this so much???
EdF13519 July 2001
I mean the story was simple, production was fine although the budget obviously wasn't in the 10s of millions of dollars and I never quite understood why George and Alicia liked each other so much. But despite all of that I sat in the theater very happy that I took a chance on this one. I think the spartan production made the whole thing seem more real, and since it seemed more real I wanted them to be happy... The characters were all very likeable too, like Gerard and Alicia's aunt. Finally, bonus points for not using subtitles (hey, I understood most of the Espanol!).

Very well made first-time out for both director and star
Barberosa2 June 2001
We saw this last night in pre-release at a special program with Jeffrey Lyons and Roberta Barrows. The star, Tunde Adibempe, joined them for a Q & A session after the screening. Joel Hopkins has re-made his NYU senior thesis short (Jorge) into a full length engaging, warm comedy/love story that rings true for all the right reasons. It is low budget but not cheaply made. The production values (particularly the music) are all first rate and there is an unbilled (very brief) cameo appearance by Amy Sedaris.

Tunde Adibempe is such a natural and relaxed actor. He has great obvious affection for physical comedy and has the natural stoic looks of Peter Sellers to boot. This means that he can act as if he is almost part of the audience looking at what is happening around him on-screen with quizzical mystery. It is very hard to believe that prior to this role he had absolutely no screen experience.

Humble, lasting impression
tkim145 December 2005
I've given up trying to rank movies with anything systematic or consistent. Now, all i ask myself is, what did i feel? Something about this movie had tremendous heart, and feeling, and it stayed with me well after the credits. Most likely it was Jorge and his earnest efforts at love. He's such a quirky, odd, adorable character.

The comedy is not self conscious, and is mainly poker face Jorge trying his heart out to win people over. I love following characters like Jorge, people who don't need Hollywood explosions and sex scenes to tell the audience what he is feeling or what he's about. It's the subtle gestures, the way he hip checks the girl in the face when he leaves the boat, or the way he puts on a tie, these nuances say everything about him. Maybe that's what i liked, the way the movie didn't pander and really respected the viewer and trusted us to pick pick up on these things. Anyways, i loved it.

Me llamo es Jorge!

Really loved this movie
patty588711 May 2004
I stumbled across this film on Netflix, and am so happy I did. It's a small gem - made with exquisite care - with sharp performances, fantastic humor, and great visual style. The budget was clearly not high, but the director has succeeded in creating a much more stylish, engaging film that many bigger studio movies. The lead, Tunde Adebimpe, recalls Cary Grant in "Bringing Up Baby" with his buttoned up suit and heavy black glasses - and his journey to Niagara with his new best friend, Gerard, in a wonderful vintage citroen, is hilarious.

The score is great. When will it be on CD?

Not a fan of romantic comedies, but this puled me in.
mat_fuller14 June 2001
I just saw this flick at the Florida Film Festival. And I can't remember the last time I've had this much fun at the movies. Not only is it one of the funniest movies in recent history, but it has the most loveable cast I can possibly imagine.

I am not a big fan of the "Romantic Comedy", but this still pulled me in. I think this is because it is much more, than the sum of it's parts. The audience at my screening was laughing outloud consistantly; and not because of forced humor (i.e. farts, poop, and crude jokes) as so many of todays movies rely upon, but because characters we liked and wanted to know were just being themselves.

I can't say enough about the cast. I challenge you to find the role in this flick that you would cast differently. I challenge you to find a shot you would frame differently. I challenge you to find a scene you would have directed differently.

I can do this all day long about this movie; but the point has been made. Do not pass Go, do not collect 200$, see this MOVIE!!!

p.s. This film contains not one curse-word or offensive scene. ANYONE and I repeat ANYONE can see this movie. Enjoy.

This is an outstanding film, everyone gave a wonderful performance and they were obviously having a good time also. It did not have to compete with the set locations or special effects. The lead actor who played George had never acted before, are you kidding me? Hard to believe how much fun this movie was. If you have missed this movie you missed a comedy gold mine- like a certain cast member taking a bath in a champagne glass! This movie needs to be re-released or something, it did not get the credit it deserved.

As in reply to an earlier post, I do not think the story line referred to the wonders-of-a-Latin-American-family-making-your-life-worth-living as much as it showed how wrong it was to base all of your actions in your life on the opinions of family members that seemed more concerned with appearances than with you. Alicia's family was not worried about the fact that she was backpacking across the country with a pretentious, conceited white guy-that was her business. They were just glad that she was home and proud to share their home and culture with her friends. George could see this was how family was supposed to be and this was a safe place to open up. Also introduced him to more of Alicia's charms I must admit. But still all in all, she could have been Polish or Israeli for all that-it was still a welcoming family. Can they help it that Latin Americans are just more fun than your average Nigerian? (kidding!)

my favorite movie of 2001
ckjd1926 January 2002
after a very disappointing year of movies no movie stands out in my mind more than "jump tomorrow". with fresh writing, directing and an incredible cast to bring it all to life "jump tomorrow" was my favorite theatre-going joy of the year. after attending the premiere of "jump tomorrow", i eagerly brought friends to see the public opening, everyone loved the movie as much as i did and we still refer to it often. we only wish we could get a copy of the movie in our hands so we could watch it over and over again!
