A Rabbit With Vampiric Tendencies.
Dawalk-115 January 2016
This ABC Weekend Special is yet another one I saw on Youtube less than a couple months ago. This is the tale of no ordinary rabbit, but rather an extraordinary one. What makes this rabbit so is that rather than feasting or feeding on the blood of people or other animals, he drains the juice out of carrots and other vegetables. After a family finds Bunnicula and decides to keep him as a pet, he later wanders away from the house and into their neighbors' yards and gardens where he continues to do his thing. Then, the neighbors head to the family's house to speak to the father and confront him about these suspicious and unusual incidents that had been occurring, believing that the rabbit is indeed the one responsible for this. The family's dog, Harold, and cat, Chester, then attempt to keep an eye on the vampiric bunny and follow him closely, as they do some investigating themselves.

My feelings about this one are mixed, as I'm kind of ambivalent about this. After first seeing this, I couldn't find much to complain about, I didn't find much wrong with it. But then again, I never read the books. Even so, I still couldn't find what the fuss is, though there are some, certain, animated ABC Weekend Specials I like more than others, this being among my less favored. I may have missed something. Aside from not having read the books and reading the other reviews on here, three of which more positive than the sole negative review, on a listing of the best and worst animated T.V. pilots I read on a site late last night/early morning, I learned of the trivia stating that this was actually a pilot considered to be expanded into a T.V. series at one point. I didn't know that and I'm just wondering, how the writer of that online article knew that? That's news to me. Anyway, I'm indecisive on this, so I decided to give it either a 5 or 6 star rating, as it's in the middle. Because from what I read in one IMDb member's lower rated review and the commentary on that other site, I'll consider it decent, but not perfect. I'll just chalk this up to being an average adaptation. A somewhat good, if not great one.

Vampire Bunny

This is such a cute kids movie. The animation is great and the voice acting is quite good. I have to admit that Wallace And Gromit's Curse Of The Were-Rabbit was better animation and story wise but this is a great movie for young kids that isn't too scary or intense. It is based on a childrens book and although I haven't read it, according to those that have, the movie does not stray too far from the book. I actually saw this on YouTube, as part of the ABC Weekend Special and even as an adult, I found myself really enjoying it. This is a great Halloween movie for very young kids who might find movies like Coraline, ParaNorman and Monster House a little too intense.

Bunnicula

The story (from this cartoon) is that the Monroe family finds a bunny in a box. Family pets Harold the dog and Chester the cat suspect that the bunny, named Bunnicula, is a vampire who has been draining all the vegetables of their juices. The neighbors also suspect Bunnicula of causing strange accidents. Is the bunny really the cause of these things or is something else going on? I grew up with the Bunnicula books, written by James Howe. This cartoon is loosely based on the first book in the series. Although it doesn't follow the book too closely, it's still cute and enjoyable in its own way. Nice Ruby Spears animation. Give it a shot if you can find it.

Great kids movie...

I read the Bunnicula book series as a child, and loved it. As a childhood fan of horror (and especially vampires), this movie was right up my alley. It has vampires and all the lore that surround them, but without all the frightening stuff. Bunnicula, after all, does not drink blood, but vegetable juice. This is a lot of fun for folks of all ages. If you liked the books, then you will love this movie. I give it two thumbs up. A+

Wonderful movie to go with great books

I loved the Bunnicula books and movie as a child. I am actually looking for them online so I can buy them for my son. The whole idea of them is wonderful for children. A bunny that sucks the juice out of vegetables, what better way to make veggies sound cool to kids. Real quality entertainment that is so hard to find anymore. These days it is all about who is beating up who and how cool it all looks. Bunnicula is "hunted" by a cat and a dog. It is all done in a more peacefull manner than the stuff that plays on Saturday morning. I will be finding and purchasing a copy of this for my film and book collections. Vampires without the blood and violence.

Bunnicula, the Vampire Rabbit (1982)

** (out of 4)

Throughout a small town, the vegetables begin to lose their colors. Tomatoes, carrots and other items are now all white with a tooth mark in them. Soon a family begins to think that their pet bunny might be a vampire. BUNNICULA, THE VAMPIRE RABBIT originally aired as part of the ABC Weekend Specials series. I must say that the title itself is great but the actual film isn't all that good. The animation itself is quite good but that's about it. The characters are pretty forgettable and that includes the actual vampire bunny. Perhaps the film would have been there had they actually featured the title character more. The idea of fruit being drained of its juice is interesting but very little is done with it.
