When Malayalam cinema had great supporting actors .....
Murali was an actor who always upstaged Mammoty and Mohanlal. He is terrific in Kanalkkattu even though he plays the supporting role of Mamooty/Nathu Narayanan's well wisher who tries to put him on the straight path. There are many good supporting actors in this film. Mamu Koya (who is still active), Oduvil Unnikishnan, Paravoor Bharathan and Mohan Raj (who plays Karim Bhai). KPAC Lalitha was sensational as the prostitute who covets Nathu.
It is an amusing film that becomes too sentimental in the second half after Nathu Narayanan accidentally kills a man. Urvashi was so pretty and adorable as Jayram's wife. Relations between Hindus and Christians was always a concern for Lohitadas. He explored the problems between the two communities in Sasneham. Over here there is the cruel Christian mother in law (played by the great Meena) who is unwilling to accept her son's newly converted wife. Lohithadas was one of the great screen writers of commercial Malayalam cinema.
Sathyan Anthikad's unimaginative and unobtrusive direction always worked well. He never tries anything new and sticks to the script. This approach usually worked.
