At five o'clock in the morning Niki is gathering everything of value in his house. His wife and child are sleeping. He has bought himself a passport and is going to work illegally in Germany. He is going with Cretu, his childhood friend. The voyage proves more difficult than they were expecting. Written by
"Bucuresti-Wien, 8-15" is a 13-minute Romanian movie from 15 years ago. The writer and director is Catalin Mitulescu, one of Romania's most famous filmmakers today and the cast also includes some names that should at least be known to Romanian audiences. Unfortunately, the story is not on par. It is about a young man who tries to leave Romania for Germany/Austria and goes on a train ride. The first half takes place at his home and there are issues about affection and love and the seconds half takes place at the train. Where is he going to find his happiness? I cannot say I cared too much about the fate of the main character. "Bleak" does not have to mean bad, but here it sort of does. I was not impressed watching this. Not really interesting. Thumbs down.
