Ritual
6 December 2013 | by (Vanuatu) – See all my reviews

Visual creations are seen in Japan as either entertainment for those without occupation or a moment of respite for those that are in pain. They prefer obscene scandals or the illusion of beautifully adapted fictions. "Ritual" is a movie that develops slowly, has a certain concept and aims towards a certain category of viewers. It is a sad description of the battle between reality and fantasy. The man, the "director" wants to escape fantasy, a state in which he feels trapped and lethargic, although inspired and emotional, while the woman continues a frenetic ritual in order to escape reality, to stop existing. He wants to exist, to leave a trace, to take action, while she wants to be gone, because everything, she thinks, is going to be more beautiful without her. This collision of worlds gives birth to a very philosophical dialog between them, while the surreal urban imagery give an impending feeling of gloomy anticipation.
