The top 25 underappreciated films of 2001

4 December 2013 1:17 AM, PST | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

Odd List Ryan Lambie Simon Brew 5 Dec 2013 - 06:54

Our voyage through history's underappreciated films arrives at the year 2001, and a vintage year for lesser-seen gems...

Stanley Kubrick and Arthur C Clarke may have seen 2001 as the year we'd head off to meet alien intelligences in the depths of space, but in reality, its cinematic landscape was dominated by fantasy rather than extra-terrestrials. Rowling and Tolkien dominated the box office, with Harry Potter And The Philosopher's Stone and The Fellowship Of The Ring earning almost $1bn each, while Monsters, Inc and Shrek thrilled old and young audiences alike.

At the other end of the spectrum of success, 2001 was such a vintage year for movies that we had to whittle our usual selection of 25 films down from an initial selection of more than 40. This is why the decision was made - with heavy heart - to exclude some of our favourite films, »

More Join Sequels ‘Mockingjay’ & ‘Dumb & Dumber To’

16 September 2013 3:48 PM, PDT | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

It’s taken almost twenty years to finally reunite Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels for another round of hijinks involving their hilarious creations Lloyd Christmas and Harry Dunne. The Farrelly Brothers have been off the comedic boil for quite sometime and are in desperate need of a hit. Here’s hoping the long-in-development Dumb & Dumber To can see them recapture some of the magic from the 1994 quotable comedy classic. We’re hearing the stunning Frank Darabont favourite Laurie Holden (The Walking Dead, The Mist, The Majestic) is taking the female lead in the film also co-starring Kathleen Turner, as well as the returning Brady Bluhm and Cam Neely.

With the recent confirmation that Julianne Moore is now officially onboard as the character of Alma Coin in split final chapter Mockingjay Part 1 and 2, we’ve more casting news on the survival thriller franchise The Hunger Games. Lily Rabe has joined the »

'Walking Dead' Actress Laurie Holden Nabs Lead in 'Dumb and Dumber To'

16 September 2013 10:30 AM, PDT | Moviefone | See recent Moviefone news »

"Walking Dead" actress Laurie Holden is used to working with characters who want to eat brains, but now she'll be working with characters who could use them.

Holden, best known for her role as Andrea on AMC's "The Walking Dead," has landed a lead part in "Dumb and Dumber To." She will play Adele Pichlow, described by Deadline as "the well to do wife of a doctor who is up to no good and who plans to use Harry and Lloyd to cover her tracks."

This is Holden's first high-profile role following her exit from "The Walking Dead" earlier this year. The actress previously worked with "Dumb and Dumber" star Jim Carrey in 2001's "The Majestic."

Production has already kicked off on the follow-up to the 1994 comedy, set to take place (and be released) 20 years after the original. Jeff Daniels and a toothless Carrey will reprise their roles.

Number 23 recap: let me count the ways in which you don't add up

Jim Carrey has made some curious choices through his career, and the very worst of them to date screens on TV this evening. Stuart Heritage provides a primer

Spoiler Alert: This blog is published ahead of the screening on Channel 4 tonight (Sunday) at 10pm. Do not read if you have not seen the film and don't want to know anything about it.

"Of course, time is just a counting system … numbers with meaning attached to them" – Walter

For the most part, you know where you are with a Jim Carrey comedy. There's a man who can only tell the truth or say yes or looking after some penguins instead of just giving them to a zoo like a normal person. But when Jim Carrey drops the zaniness, all bets are off. You might get something clever like Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, or brave like I Love You Phillip Morris, »

The HeyUGuys Instant Watching Viewer’s Guide – July 2013

15 July 2013 4:00 AM, PDT | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

In a manner similar to what happens with the television schedules, the streaming services suddenly go quiet in the summer. For true cinema fans this is pretty good news because the art house stuff comes along as well as some of the better catalogue titles that might have appeared elsewhere before.

It will probably be September before any subscription winning blockbusters are added again but the smart money is on one of the big ones adding The Avengers and (fingers crossed) the last season of Breaking Bad.

By the time you read this, the new Netflix exclusive series Orange is the New Black from the creator of Weeds, will be available on Netflix. Early word is that it’s actually the best Netflix exclusive title so far, which is good news after the horrendous Hemlock Grove. I will weigh in with an opinion next month.

Interview: Martin Landau Lends His Voice to ‘Frankenweenie’

15 January 2013 8:40 AM, PST | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – One of director Tim Burton’s great actor collaborators is the veteran performer Martin Landau. Landau voices Mr. Rsykruski, a science teacher who inspires young Victor Frankenstein in “Frankenweenie,” released on Blu-Ray on January 8th. This is part of Laudau’s magnificent 60 year career in film, television, stage and acting instruction.

It’s difficult to sum up Landau’s career because of it’s depth and breadth. The 84 year old actor was born in Brooklyn, New York, and had an early interest in cartooning for newspapers. He worked as an illustrator for the New York Daily News for five years, before the acting bug bit him. He was in an exceptional era and place for the craft, as Lee Strasberg’s Actor’s Studio was being formulated, and out of the 2000 applicants for 1955 only two were selected – Martin Landau and Steve McQueen. From there he began a stage career in Manhattan, »
