He feels himself transported to another time and era, to another birth, and drawn to a woman named Ratna (Hema Malini). He is unable to leave this experience behind him, and decides to find out what this means. He discovers that in his past life he was a Chief Singer in the emperor's court, his name was Prakash and he had fallen in love with a courtesan named Ratna, much to the chargin and anger of his family and the emperor's and his officials. They are tragically separated. He subsequently comes across a portrait of Ratna, and shortly after he meets a gypsy, Jhumri (also Hema Malini) who looks exactly like Ratna. Soon Jhumri is also able to recollect her past life, and her love for Prakash. This does not auger well with Rita Malhotra (Asha Sachdev) who loves Suraj, and Appa (Prem Chopra), the son... Romantic Musical
12 May 2014 | by See all my reviews

Mehbooba features the combination of Rajesh Khanna with his pet director Shakti Shamantha. It also has Hemamalini with whom Kaka has been paired the most number of times in his distinguished film career. The film is a romantic musical with the theme of reincarnation.

The true spirit of the movie is its sublime music by R.D Burman. It is one of his best works. All the songs are melodious & beautifully picturised.

The film has got excellent locations, photography, music & dances excellent choreographed. Hemamalini get a chance to parade her dancing talents in this film. Villainy by Prem Chopra is routine.

Rajesh Khanna is as usual lovely in the 2 roles but here, he is a bit overweight. Yet his charm is intact. It was his home production & it was released to prop up his sagging career.

The weak point is the script though it has been adapted from a Gulshan Nanda novel. The 2nd half is very predictable & does not hold your interest that much.

The film released with high expectations because of the excellent team but met with only an average success.

However, Mehbooba is one of the greatest musicals of all times in Hindi cinema.
