If I could go back in time and sit front row to any concert of my choosing it would definitely be this 1996 G3 Concert featuring Joe Satriani, Eric Johnson, and Steve Vai. Three of the best guitarists ever in one concert - it's a guitarist's dream come to life! All three guitarists have their own unique styles and create such great music and an emotional atmosphere that is beyond description.
Joe Satriani there's just not another one like him. No one else has the perfect combination of touch, speed, and musicality that makes Joe Satriani so great. Satch begins the show with the groovy "Cool #9", takes you on an emotional odyssey with "Flying in a Blue Dream", and ends with the sensational high-powered "Summer Song."
The stylistic blend that Eric Johnson possesses is difficult to sum up. Just think of almost every genre of music gently molded into one and you've got the guitar styling of Eric Johnson. He leaps into the show with "Intro Song" (later called "12 to 12 Vibe" on his album Bloom), descends into the dreamy ballad "Manhattan", and ends with the exciting tribute to Stevie Ray Vaughan fittingly called "SRV."
Then it's Steve Vai's turn. The musical firebrand credited many times by Frank Zappa as a "stunt guitarist" explodes into his set with the adrenaline blitzkrieg "Answers." After an unbelievable guitar interlude extravaganza, Vai goes into the musical fantasy that is "For the Love of God" and ends with a guaranteed head-banger, "The Attitude Song."
But just when you think it's over they all come out and jam together, adding their own unique spice of guitar styles to each song. The jam first blasts off with the Freddie King and Jeff Beck song "Going Down" featuring Joe Satriani on vocals. Next is Frank Zappa's "My Guitar Wants to Kill Your Mama," featuring the greatest mind-boggling guitar solos of the entire performance and showcasing Steve Vai and Mike Keneally on vocals. The show's grand finale relaxes deep into the great Jimi Hendrix blues jam "Red House" featuring Eric Johnson on vocals.
You'll never see another concert like this one and if you are a fan of Joe Satriani, Eric Johnson, and Steve Vai you won't want to miss it!
