Capaldi in a testament of the Blank Generation

Was this film written as a vehicle for the twentysomething Peter Capaldi? The role of Dillon, the sweet, serious young working class Londoner who wants nothing more than to be respectable and responsible but finds himself inexorably drawn into a life of art and rebellion, couldn't be more perfect for the actor who made his name as the siren-bewitched young businessman in "Local Hero." This belongs to a genre of low-budget British films from the eighties--"Letter to Brezhnev," "High Hopes," "Sammy and Rosie Get Laid"--about young Englishmen and women confronted with the aftermath of the collapse of the British empire, which John Lydon had predicted for them a decade earlier: "No future for you." There are a couple of clumsy attempts to lighten the atmosphere with magic realism--the talking toilet should have been snipped right out of the negative in my opinion, but apparently enough people found it hilarious that it's permanently stuck there. The wish-fulfillment ending is also out of place but it probably had to be there. Otherwise the crushing of Dillon's hopes for himself, and his devolution into just another angry punk on the street, would be almost too sad to watch.
