Year in Review: Music Videos a.k.a. Short Movie Musicals

29 December 2010 9:33 AM, PST | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

I couldn't be happier that the music video has regained its cultural capital in the age of YouTube. There's something about the form that is just magical. Or maybe it's just that it's been the most reliable fix for movie-musical lovers during the past 30 years. You can pretend these 3 to 5 minute show stoppers are but one scene in a larger movie musical, can't you? At least that's what I do with my favorite videos.

So herewith, several favorites in no particular order. If you're wondering what music videos have to do with The Film Experience remember that they're short films and that this year's most celebrated director David Fincher (The Social Network) started that mammoth career by making mammoth music videos for Madonna (among others).

Please to enjoy. And let me know your favorite(s) in the comments.

Year in Review: The Ten Best Horror Films of 2010

29 December 2010 7:20 AM, PST | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

Being a heavy horror fan is a tough gig. Most producers look at horror as a quick buck genre, a franchise to be used, abused, ridden hard and put up wet to make a profit. They don’t really care too much about putting out quality product, instead they just opt for product. Or at least that’s how it seems. 2010, to me at least, felt like one of the weakest years on record for horror. I thought last year was bad, but then the past 350 some odd days happened. I’m pretty confident I could say that this is the worst year for horror since the birth of Film School Rejects. It felt that bad. Regardless of my own disappointment in the movies this year, and in myself for missing a few releases, I scrapped the bottom of the barrel barren and plucked out ten (plus one!) [that means 11] horror movies that aren’t complete wastes of your »

Newly Invented: Cameras On Swords

28 December 2010 1:35 PM, PST | BestWeekEver | See recent BestWeekEver news »

It’s astounding that no action movie so far has thought of putting a camera on the end of a sword. It seems so obvious now. It’s so cool that even  guys who duct tapes cameras to things and go to conventions in Sweden can look cool while doing it. (The video is of guys at a martial arts convention in Sweden). They could have made Kill Bill for like $3.75 if they would have hired these guys. Everyone, Try This At Home! You know you’ve got a sword. Christmas was like 3 days ago. Don’t tell me you didn’t get at least one sword. Thanks, Urlesque. »

‘Hanna’ starring Saoirse Ronan – trailer review

27 December 2010 6:54 AM, PST | The Scorecard Review | See recent Scorecard Review news »

Hanna

Directed by: Joe Wright

Starring: Saoirse Ronan, Cate Blanchett, Eric Bana

Rating: PG-13

Release Date: April 8, 2011

Trailer Score: 10/10

My Thoughts: Hanna is one of those rare movies that is so chock full of potential that I can honestly say I don’t know where to begin. And for those that know me, personally or professionally, most will agree that it’s a rare occasion when I’m left speechless.

It’s difficult to say what drew me in first with this trailer. On a strictly visual level, Joe Wright, the same man who brought us that staggering long take of the beach in Atonement has never been one to disappoint visually. Hell, it could be be a film about a cat peeing in a litter box and I have no doubt that Joe Wright would find a way to make it look beautiful.

But thankfully, it’s not. It »

Owf’s 52 Must See Films of 2011

24 December 2010 11:00 PM, PST | Obsessed with Film | See recent Obsessed with Film news »

Usually around this time of the year we list maybe 10 or 20 films that we think are as absolute ‘Must See’s’ for what the next 12 months of cinema has to offer us but as the clock is ticking ever closer to midnight on 2010, we thought we would challenge ourselves a little further this time around. The question I posed to the Owf staff recently was… can Cinema in 2011 produce enough ‘Must See’ films to hit 52, which would ratio out to be just one film per week? That’s all we are hopeful for here… just one film every Friday that justifies us parting with our ever increasingly important cash in these tough economic times.

Did we manage to find 52? Kind of.

There’s certainly 52 films listed here but once we got to around 30, the whole thing became a struggle and we had to fill it out disappointingly with the usual array of over-budgeted summer spectacles, »

Thurman Stalker Offered Bail

23 December 2010 12:01 AM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

A man awaiting trial for allegedly breaking a restraining order by attempting to contact Uma Thurman has been given the chance to post bail - if he can raise $250,000 (£166,000).

Jack Jordon, who was convicted of stalking the Kill Bill actress in 2008, is accused of breaching a protective order by calling Thurman's cell and New York office phone, prompting her to lodge a complaint with police.

He was arrested during a raid at his mother's Maryland home in November and was placed under doctors' supervision. Jordon was subsequently charged with two counts of criminal contempt and appeared in court last week when he entered a not guilty plea.

He was ordered to remain in custody at New York's Rikers Island prison as he awaits trial.

However, on Wednesday a judge gave him a chance to get out of jail - but only if he can post the $250,000 cash bail or $500,000 (£333,000) bond set during the hearing.

The initial 2008 restraining order was put in place after Jordon was found guilty of fourth-degree stalking and one count of second-degree aggravated harassment after sending the blonde beauty creepy letters and threatening to kill himself outside her New York home in 2005.

He was ordered to star away from Thurman for five years. »

Christina Ricci: Robert Pattinson Is a Good Kisser

20 December 2010 11:11 PM, PST | Celebrity Mania | See recent Celebrity Mania news »

Robert Pattinson knows well how to kiss a girl, that is according to Christina Ricci. When stopping by the "Rachael Ray" show, the actress starring opposite the "Twilight Saga" heartthrob in "Bel Ami" has nothing but praises for her co-star when she was questioned about his kissing ability.

"He's a good kisser," raved the 30-year-old when speaking to host Rachael Ray on Monday, December 20. She quickly added, "He's a lovely human being also. He reminded me of my best friend's little brothers growing up. He's just a silly, fun guy; we laughed a lot. He makes fun of himself all the time; he's adorable..."

While Christina is full of praises, co-star Uma Thurman isn't exactly mesmerized by the rumored boyfriend of Kristen Stewart. In fact, the "Kill Bill" star finds their steamy scenes disturbing. "In the last movies, I only have romantic relationships with younger guys," she shared in recent interview. »

Uma Thurman: It Was Weird Being Married To Robert Pattinson! I’m Too Old!

While most ladies would be falling over themselves to be married to R-Patz, Uma had quite the opposite feeling toward her co-star!

Uma Thurman isn’t exactly dazzled by Edward Cullen, is she? In a recent interview, the 40-year-old actress revealed that being married to Robert Pattinson in the upcoming film Bel Ami didn’t exactly leave her weak in the knees.

The Kill Bill star got the opportunity that every Twi-hard only dreams of when she played wifey to Rob in their new movie Bel Ami (also starring Christina Ricci), but the role made her feel like quite the cougar!

“In the last movies, I only have romantic relationships with younger guys,” Uma said. “Of course I’m very disturbed by the fact that Robert Pattinson played my husband.”

She may have a point; Rob is 16 years her junior. However, we think most Twi-mom’s wouldn’t mind robbing »

Actress Vivica A. Fox is preparing to become a mother in 2011 after declaring her toyboy lover "The One" and expressing her desire to start a family with him.

The Kill Bill star began dating a 26-year-old man known only as Slimm at the start of 2010 and they briefly split in August before reuniting again.

Now the 46 year old reveals the couple is planning on trying for a baby as soon as her stint in touring play Cheaper to Keep Her wraps early next year.

Asked whether Slimm is "The One" for marriage and babies, Fox says, "Yes, absolutely. My career has been my baby for such a long time and I waited for God to send me a good man.

"I got to finish this tour first, but after this tour we're planning to do the thing (try for a baby)!"

Fox admits she would be open to adopting children if she fails to conceive naturally, but insists: "I'm very fertile, so I don't think I'll have a problem." »

Thurman Stalker Remanded In Custody In New York

17 December 2010 5:26 PM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

A man convicted of stalking Uma Thurman in 2008 has been held without bail ahead of his court date in New York next week, when he will face two charges for criminal contempt.

Jack Jordan broke the terms of his restraining order in October when he attempted to contact the actress by making a series of calls to the Kill Bill star's cell and New York office phone, prompting Thurman to lodge an official complaint with police.

He was arrested after a raid on his mother's home in Maryland in November and was placed under doctors' supervision.

Jordan was charged with two counts of criminal contempt for allegedly violating the order of protection, and was transferred to New York on Thursday.

He was also hit with more stalking charges.

Jordan appeared before Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Gregory Carro later on Thursday and entered a not guilty plea.

He was ordered to remain in custody at the tough Rikers Island prison until his next hearing on Wednesday.

A request for protective custody from Jordan's legal team was rejected by Judge Carro.

In 2008, Jordan was found guilty of fourth-degree stalking and one count of second-degree aggravated harassment after sending the blonde beauty creepy letters and threatening to kill himself outside her New York home in 2005.

He was ordered to stay away from Thurman for five years. »

Miramax Announces Potential Sequels from 'Rounders' to 'Shakespeare in Love'

16 December 2010 1:30 PM, PST | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

Miramax and The Weinstein Company announced a new agreement today that will see them partner on the production of sequels to some of Miramax's best-known properties. The first films listed under the agreement are sequels to Bad Santa, Rounders and Shakespeare in Love. But it doesn't end there.

Other potential projects are film or television projects branching off from Bridget Jones's Diary, Copland, From Dusk Til Dawn, Swingers, Clerks, Shall We Dance and The Amityville Horror. The two companies have already been working together on the impending releases of Scream 4 (April 15, 2011), Spy Kids 4 (August 19, 2011) and Scary Movie 5. They'll also be collaborating on new special edition materials for Blu-ray releases of films from Miramax's back catalogue, which has me thinking the Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair may finally see the light of day.

While most of these projects seem pretty pointless to me, I think a Bad Santa sequel could be pretty fun. »
