The Academy has invited 683 new members to join their ranks

10 hours ago | | See recent news »

Yesterday afternoon, the ranks of Oscar voters grew substantially, with some welcome diversity added in for good measure. Yes, the Academy sent out invitations for new membership about 24 hours ago, with 683 names getting the coveted tap on the proverbial shoulder. Again, what made it so interesting to note is that AMPAS seemed to actively seek out women, minorities, and younger artists, hoping to make the demographics of the Academy slightly less centered on older white males. It won’t suddenly change the makeup of the Oscar nominations or upend how the Academy Awards go down next year, but it’s a slow step in the right direction, and that’s worth applauding for sure. As you can see below, in addition to basically all of last year’s Oscar winners, the new members are a diverse slate. Among the names you’ll see in the acting branch now are John Boyega, »

Real-Life Bears and Advice From Tarantino: 7 Of The Craziest Stories From Behind The Scenes Of ‘Swiss Army Man’

21 June 2016 2:34 PM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Swiss Army Man” opens in limited release this Friday and nationwide on July 1. You’ve likely heard a lot about the film already, from the walkouts at its first Sundance screening all the way to star Daniel Radcliffe touring NYC with his stunt dummy.

Yet in a month of poorly reviewed sequels, “Swiss Army Man” stands alone as a full, pure, emotional experience. The film’s co-directors, Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, combine a sense of absurdity and seemingly low-hanging-fruit fart jokes with pathos and soul. They have created a new, magical thing.

This week, IndieWire’s deputy editor and chief critic Eric Kohn sat down with the Daniels, as they liked to be called, at a panel at New York City’s Elinor Bunin Munroe Film Center. Showing the audience clips from the film and their previous music videos, the Daniels talked about the collision of self-awareness and genuine »

Celebrity Apprentice Contestant Vivica A. Fox Slams Donald Trump: ''He's Turned Into an Absolute Jerk''

14 June 2016 12:15 PM, PDT | E! Online | See recent E! Online news »

Vivica A. Fox admits she used to like Donald Trump. She says he was an "absolute gentleman" when she was a contestant on Celebrity Apprentice. But not anymore. "He's turned into an absolute jerk and I mince no words when I say that," Fox told me earlier today while promoting Independence Day: Resurgence. "The negativity that spews out of him on a constant basis, he has brought reality [television] to politics and I've never seen it go to such a low point that it's went to." In other words, Fox is supporting Hillary Clinton for president. "We have to continue that path of progress. Barack Obama is grace under fire," the Kill Bill actress said. »

Splash remake is on the way, says producer Brian Grazer

7 June 2016 10:03 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

In an interview with CNBC, producer Brian Grazer (Inferno, A Beautiful Mind) has said that one his earliest films Splash is getting the remake treatment.

Released in 1984, Splash was Grazer and producing partner Ron Howard’s first significant hit, with Howard also directing. Tom Hanks (A Hologram for the King) and Darryl Hannah (Kill Bill) starred in the film.

In the interview, attention turned to Grazer’s original treatment of the film, which was entitled Wet and was told from the mermaid’s point of view rather than the human man’s, played by Hanks.

“I’m actually gonna do Splash today,” said Grazer. “I’m actually going to do it from the point of view of… I can’t say anything about it. There’s a movie star involved, I haven’t announced it. We’re going to do a version of [Wet], but I can’t tell you the twist. »

Quentin Tarantino’s Music Supervisor Mary Ramos on Telling Stories Through Music

3 June 2016 12:18 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

On Saturday Quentin Tarantino’s music supervisor, Mary Ramos, will be a keynote speaker at music biz event Midem in Cannes, France. Variety spoke to her about her 23-year career, including her work on Tarantino’s movies — from “Pulp Fiction” to “The Hateful Eight” — and other pics, such as this year’s best-picture Oscar-winner “Spotlight.”

So is Tarantino different from other directors? “Every director I work with has their own unique storytelling style. They’ll tell a story filtered through what’s important to them. It’s my job to help them tell their story through music,” Ramos says.

“What makes Quentin standout is his bold use of music. Often times it is a main character in his movies. The reason is the referential element to his storytelling. We respond to Quentin because music is so much in the forefront and it’s such a bold use, like using David Bowie »

Joshua Reviews Na Hong-jin’s The Wailing [Theatrical Review]

2 June 2016 7:17 AM, PDT | CriterionCast | See recent CriterionCast news »

It’s not every day that a film premieres at a prestigious, iconic film festival like Cannes, only to hit theaters within weeks of its debut. But then again, The Wailing isn’t an everyday feature film.

Hitting theaters this week from the equally singular distributors Well Go USA, The Wailing is the latest film from beloved Korean director Na Hong-jin (The Chaser, The Yellow Sea). An esoteric thriller even by Cannes standards, the 156 minute film opens with a face that’s going to be familiar to many fans of world cinema, Kunimura Jun. Jun, best known for films ranging from Audition to Kill Bill, is in rare form here however, as a mysterious newcomer to a small South Korean village, Goksung. Simply, and startlingly, known as “The Jap” to locales, his arrival brings with it a wave of violence and death, sparked by an illness that causes many natives »

Fantaspoa’s tradition of paying homage to living legends of genre cinema, such as Lloyd Kaufman, Richard Stanley and Fabio Frizzi, continues in 2016 with a mini retrospective dedicated to fearless filmmaker Brian Trenchard-Smith, key figure of the so-called Ozploitation subgenre. The project is being produced and directed by Tara Wood. Harvey and Bob Weinstein began working with Tarantino nearly 25 years ago on “Reservoir Dogs” and have partnered with Tarantino on all of his projects since.

The movie was first unveiled in November at the American Film Market. It examines the first 21 years of Tarantino’s career and includes interviews with frequent collaborators, including Samuel L. Jackson, John Travolta, Christoph Waltz, Lucy Liu, Zoë Bell, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Jamie Foxx, Eli Roth, Robert Forster, Diane Kruger, Michael Madsen and Kerry Washington.

Wood also directed the documentary “21 Years: Richard Linklater.” Both films draw upon the idea that the first 21 years of work defines the career of an artist.

With his latest, deviously disturbing horror film, Scherzo Diabolico, now infecting VOD platforms everywhere, writer/director Adrian Garcia Bogliano is plotting his next move. And it's taking him to Sweden. Christina Lindberg -- yes, that Christina Lindberg, the one who memorably starred in Thriller/They Call Her One-Eye (1973).and inspired Quentin Tarantino to make Kill Bill -- will star in the film, titled Black Circle. The film "follows the story of two sisters whose lives change dramatically after going through hypnosis using a mysterious vinyl album recorded in the 1970's." It's of note that the filmmaker is also a huge aficionado of music from that period, hosting a radio show that, whenever I've listened to it (in Spanish), is enlightening and features a frightfully weird selection of...
