Disney/Pixar off the hook in 'Nemo' suit

20 April 2005 | The Hollywood Reporter | See recent The Hollywood Reporter news »

PARIS -- A Paris court ruled Wednesday that the Walt Disney Co./Pixar cartoon fish named Nemo was not inspired by the French clown fish character Pierrot that first appeared nine years ago. Flaven Scene, publisher and rights holder of the Pierrot book, claimed that Disney, Pixar and French distributor Hachette had plagiarized the Pierrot character in the international hit film Finding Nemo. Finding in Nemo's favor, the court ordered Flaven Scene to pay €30,000 ($40,000) in damages to Disney and Pixar as well as €16,000 ($21,000) to Hachette, half in damages and half in costs. »

'Incredibles' boosts Pixar Q4 results

10 February 2005 | The Hollywood Reporter | See recent The Hollywood Reporter news »

The stellar boxoffice performance of the holiday release The Incredibles helped Pixar Animation Studios cruise past analyst expectations in its fourth quarter, though results were far short of the comparable period a year ago when Finding Nemo was in theaters. Beyond reporting earnings Thursday, chief executive Steve Jobs made it clear to Wall Street analysts that Pixar will not be taking part in the production of sequels to movies it made with the Walt Disney Co. Disney studio chairman Dick Cook said recently that Disney will create a special unit for making such movies, beginning with the planned theatrical release Toy Story 3. Jobs noted that the original movies it has made with Disney since its only sequel, Toy Story 2, have each earned more than Toy Story 2 and that profits to such sequels as Monsters, Inc. and Finding Nemo would have to be split with Disney. »

Disney Builds Animation Unit

3 February 2005 | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Walt Disney has made secret plans to build its own animation studio following the split from Pixar Animation. The movie-making partnership ended last year after the two giants failed to agree terms for the continuation of their marketing and distribution agreement. Disney is planning to christen the new animation unit with Toy Story 3 - penciled in for a 2008 release. However Pixar - responsible some of the most successful animation hits of all time, including both Toy Story films, Finding Nemo, Monsters, Inc. and recent blockbuster The Incredibles - is still angered Disney retains the sole rights to make the sequels to all joint-venture films. The critically acclaimed animation company is expected to sign a new distribution deal with either Warner Bros or Twentieth Century Fox later this year. Cars - due to hit cinemas in June - is the last film to be released under their Disney-Pixar partnership. »

U.K. chart change vaults 'Shrek 2'

25 January 2005 | The Hollywood Reporter | See recent The Hollywood Reporter news »

LONDON -- Universal Pictures International U.K., the studio's home entertainment division in Britain, has successfully challenged the way sales charts are compiled to now include boxed sets, helping to push its Shrek 2 ahead of the third Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban into the No. 3 position on the British Video Association 2004 list. The chart issued earlier this month put Warner's Harry Potter And The Prisoner Of Azkaban ahead of Shrek 2 and Buena Vista's Finding Nemo above Entertainment in Video's The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King but the decision to include box sets -- a highly popular part of the U.K. market -- means that Return of the King now holds the top slot. »
