Annoying, dumb, and occasionally dull but worth watching just for the sheer strangeness of it all, 9 June 2007

Author: TimothyFarrell from Worcester, MA

I've seen plenty of incredibly strange films. "The Holy Mountain", "Eraserhead", "Awakening of the Beast", and "Zardoz" all stick out in particular when it comes to uncompromising surrealism. Some of them I loved ("Eraserhead") and others I found to be just a bit too silly ("Zardoz"). However, they all weirded me out. "Psyched by the 4D Witch" is now added to the list. Its annoying, dumb, and a bit repetitive, but its one of the most bizarre things I've witnessed. I'd be hard pressed to think of a film that absolutely refuses to follow the laws of narrative cinema as much as this one.

The film is told almost entirely with psychedelic effects. Its obviously a low-budget production and it shows. The films often resemble silent home movies with narration or vintage stag films. One a technical scale, this is one amazingly inept film. However, its fascinating because I'm completely clueless as to what the director was trying to achieve. Is it erotica, horror, or (most likely) a compete head trip? Whatever it is, its stranger than all belief. Its also pretty funny at moments, with some the most pretentious narration this side of Ed Wood and some very awkward sexual dialog. Its crammed full of quotable and off the wall lines. "Psyched by the 4D Witch" is bound to give you a headache but its a truly amazing bad film. (6/10)
