The demise of the celluloid secretary

1 November 2011 3:12 AM, PDT | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Ghostbuster's bespeckled Janine Melnitz is a classic film secretary, but the job has been demoted in Hollywood

With Ghostbusters back on the big screen this month, proton packs will no doubt pop into the mind of every potential viewer. But, as crucial as the stream-crossing equipment of Venkman, Egon, Ray and Winston is, the far more ordinary telephone deserves some love, too. After all, it gave secretary Janine Melnitz the perfect reason to squawk that immortal line: "Ghostbusters, whaddya want?!"

With the sound still carrying across cultural space more than 25 years later, Annie Potts's rendition of the overworked, underimpressed Brooklynite Janine stole scenes from every one of the Ghostbusters – with her small talk with Egon (Janine: "Do you have any hobbies?" Spengler: "I collect spores, mold and fungus") a high point. While Potts went on to steal scenes again from Molly Ringwald in Pretty in Pink and voice Woody's »

Carrie Fisher: Hollywood confidential | Observer profile

29 October 2011 4:11 PM, PDT | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Ect, Michael Jackson, James Blunt, her abiding love-hate for Princess Leia…the new memoir from the actress, novelist and supreme storyteller could be her most engrossing work yet

Carrie Fisher is one of cinema's most unusual characters – and perhaps Hollywood's ultimate survivor. Thrust into the spotlight by the unexpected success of Star Wars in the late 1970s, she has always had an uneasy relationship with fame. The daughter of "America's sweethearts" Eddie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds, she has never known an ordinary life. "You might say I'm the product of Hollywood inbreeding," she writes. "When two celebrities mate, something like me is the result."

Fisher will be in the headlines again in the next few weeks. Her latest memoir, Shockaholic will cover, as part of her routinely vivid life, her friendship with the late Michael Jackson. She met Jackson through the woman who was briefly her stepmother, Elizabeth Taylor, who'll »

16 September 2011 4:12 PM, PDT | OnTheFlix | See recent OnTheFlix news »

Big Brother 13 Jordan & Jeff spotted partying it up at the wrap party last night. There they are. America's sweethearts Jordan and Jeff from Big Brother 11 and 13 were spotted out last night at the fun wrap party to celebrate another successful season. Chelsea from BB9 also joined them for some photo fun. I have no idea who that other guy is. However,he showed in a lot of the photos, which was quite odd. Earlier in the night,Jordan was seen partying with her new Bff and BB13 winner Rachel Reilly. The continued to complement each other, claiming they couldn't have made it as far as they did this past season without each other's help.

Lovingly known as "America's Sweetheart," Julia Roberts has probably fallen in love onscreen more times than anyone since Humphrey Bogart.

But contrary to popular belief, Roberts does not love everyone.

You see, there's a dark side to Julia, and when you land on her s**t list, well, it ain't a pretty place to be.

Soak up the venom that is this one-minute tirade against "you" in a NextMovie original.

John Lasseter interview: Cars 2, Pixar, Disney, The Muppets, Frankenweenie and more

19 July 2011 3:25 AM, PDT | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

Disney Animation Studios and Pixar chief creative officer, John Lasseter, chats to us about animation, making Cars 2, and the British rain…

John Lasseter is tired. He's been doing interviews all day for Cars 2 by the time we turn up in the graveyard slot. A spent cup of coffee by his side, at one point he looks like he might nod off on us. He wouldn't be the first.

But then we start talking animation and it's as if fresh jolts of energy are rippling through his body. His infectious enthusiasm for the art comes forth, and we settle down for a chat about it, and his new film, Cars 2...

The last film director that I can remember was so senior in a movie studio was Joe Roth, who was heading up Disney in the 1990s.

That's interesting, yeah.

And Joe Roth couldn't make films himself while he was heading up Fox, »

Should These Ladies Be Hollywood’s Highest Paid Actresses?

6 July 2011 12:09 PM, PDT | Fandango | See recent Fandango news »

Forbes created a list of Hollywood's highest paid actresses, highlighting those who earned the most dough from May 2010 to May 2011, for a total of $218 million. Oscar-winners like Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts made the list -- which doesn't feel like a huge surprise -- but the other picks are kind of a bummer. Coming in at $30 million and tied for first place are Salt star Angelina Jolie and Sex and the City vet Sarah Jessica Parker -- who is hanging onto that film franchise for dear life when she's not designing clothes and fragrances, or pretending it's still the 90s. In fact, most of the list reads like a who's who of cruddy rom-coms starring America's sweethearts who are existing on name recognition alone. At least Jennifer Aniston is tied with someone who didn't shack up...

Jennifer Aniston on Being "More Comfortable in My Body and My Skin" Than Ever!

25 June 2011 6:07 AM, PDT | Popsugar.com | See recent Popsugar news »

Jennifer Aniston talked about straddling her costar Charlie Day at yesterday's Horrible Bosses press conference, but conversation also moved on to slightly more PG topics! She touched on the worst job she's ever had as a Big Apple bike messenger at just 19. Another of her leading men, Jason Sudeikis touched on a run-in he had with the law around the same age. Jennifer had more to share about accepting a role with such filthy language, saying she wasn't worried about affected her America's sweetheart status. They said: Jennifer, what's the toughest job you've ever had and why did you change up your look for this role? Ja: The toughest job I've ever had was being a bike messenger in New York City. I was 19. Js: That's hot. Ja: Not if you saw me riding a bike. My look for this? I knew I wanted her to look different. With the dark hair, »

Elizabeth Taylor: The life, the looks, the movies, the smarts, the talent

23 March 2011 9:00 PM, PDT | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Taylor was always bigger than her movies and even towards the end of her life, proved that age could not wither her

The Cleopatra costume will, surely, dominate the news reports but with all respect to the Egyptian queen, Liz was bigger than that.

Elizabeth Taylor evokes more images than the number of husbands she had. She was the breathtakingly beautiful child who – unlike her near contemporary, Judy Garland – seemed to slip into adulthood unscarred by her precocious professional success; the sultry dramatic actress; the compulsive bride, who went through husbands like fashion trends; the scarlet woman who broke up America's sweethearts, Eddie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds; the female half of what can very legitimately be described as the greatest love affair of the 20th century; the most beautiful woman in the world; front-page stalwart of the National Enquirer; star of some of the best movies of her era; star »
