So So At Best

This is a film about a school which needs a substitute teacher since the last one ended up crawling out of class bleeding from the lip. The class is the worst in school, and Ms. Lo (the thin but pretty Yo Yo Mung)finally tracks down a candidate in Cheung Wing (Nick Cheung)who is a former schoolmate of Ms. Lo's and is now a Triad leader. The feeling is that a tough guy like him can install discipline to this unruly bunch. The question is, does he? This was a good idea but the execution kind of falls flat. There are some good scenes, like the one in which Wing takes the class on a field trip to the underbelly of Hong Kong to show the kids why they'd be better off in school getting an education, but the film lacks a sense of continuity. Karen Mok, as Sister Teresa, is wasted in a small role. They could have made her an integral part but barely used her. I like Yo Yo Mung, she portrays Ms. Lo as sweet and I like Nick Cheung's character, but its the story that doesn't hold up. Its not a bad film, I'm only giving it a marginal thumbs down. I just felt that there should have been more classroom scenes and more sexual tension between Cheung Wing and Ms. Lo. I'm not saying avoid at all costs, I'm saying its not as good as it could have been.
