- Potiphar: You there! Have you cleaned this entire courtyard by yourself?
- Joseph: Yes.
- Zuleika: He's a hard worker.
- [whispering to Potiphar]
- Zuleika: Maybe we could put him to better use at the banquet hall.
- Potiphar: My wife thinks you should work for her. What do you say?
- Joseph: I cannot say. A slave is not his own master.
- Potiphar: Well said.
- [Potiphar comes into Joseph's prison cell]
- Joseph: Potiphar?
- Potiphar: Pharoah's butler said you interpret dreams.
- Joseph: That is true, yes.
- Potiphar: Pharoah is tortured by a dream. None of his wise men can explain it. I am to bring you to the palace.
- [turns to leave]
- Joseph: Potiphar! It's good to see you again.
- [Potiphar looks back at a smiling Joseph]
- Potiphar: [shakes his head whilst sighing] How could I have allowed this to happen? My wife...
- Joseph: [touches Potiphar's shoulder] I understand. Let's go.
- Rachel: Jacob, even God rested on the seventh day. He'll find his future soon enough. Let him be with his brothers.
- Asenath: [after Joseph has placed Simeon under arrest] Joseph, they are just trying to feed their families.
- Joseph: They're thieves, here to steal our grain.
- Asenath: They needed food and they were ready to pay for it. Joseph, they've done nothing to you.
- Joseph: Nothing?
- [pauses and sighs]
- Joseph: They're my brothers.
- Asenath: [in disbelief] What?
- Joseph: They sold me. They sold me into slavery. I never got to say goodbye to my mother, I never got to watch my father grow old.
- Asenath: Joseph, I didn't know.
- [hugs him]
- Asenath: You're here now. You have a home, a wife who loves you. You have everything.
- Joseph: No. Not everything.
- [looks down below at Simeon's cell]
- Asenath: I thought you learned something down there. Remember when I would bring you food?
- Joseph: Yes.
- [takes her hand]
- Joseph: It's what kept me going.
- [hugs Asenath]
- Simeon: [seeing Joseph above him] Hey! You can't keep me in here forever! My brothers will come for me!
- [the words echo and Joseph walks away from Asenath]
- Asenath: [as Joseph walks away] Joseph...
- Joseph: I thought I did what's right/ I thought I had the answers/ I thought I chose the surest road/ But that road brought me here
- Judah: Take any of us, Your Grace, but please, let the boy go.
- Joseph: You would sacrifice yourselves for a half-brother who's spoiled by your father?
- Judah: Yes.
- Joseph: Why? Why should you care if I take him...
- [grabs Benjamin]
- Joseph: ... beat him, make him a slave?
- Judah: Because I will not make my father suffer... again.
- Joseph: [releases Benjamin] Again? What do you mean, "again"?
- Judah: [sighs] Our brother was not killed by wolves. We were blinded by jealousy and sold him into slavery. For twenty years, we have lived with that guilt.
- [Joseph drops his dagger]
- Judah: We can't go back without the boy. My father could not bear it a second time, and neither could we. If anyone is to be punished...
- [kneels down and burys his face in Joseph's robe]
- Judah: ... it should be us.
- [Joseph looks at his brothers in disbelief and then down at Judah; covers his mouth and looks away; looks back at Judah and removes his crown]
- Joseph: I will not harm any of you...
- [kneels down and puts his hand on Judah's shoulder]
- Joseph: ... or our father.
- [pauses]
- Joseph: I am your brother, Joseph.
- Judah: [looks up in disbelief] Joseph!
