Parasite Eve II is arguably one of the most underrated PlayStation games. Many passed it off as a Resident Evil clone without giving the game a chance to truly shine. In fact, the only true similarity between Parasite Eve II and the Resident Evil horror series is the control scheme, which can actually be changed in the menu screen. What differentiates Parasite Eve II from many of the games on the market is its unique mix of role-play/adventure, horror, and science fiction elements.
In Parasite Eve II, the player assumes the role of former NYPD officer Aya Brea. Agent Brea now works for M.I.S.T., a top-secret organization based in Los Angeles which specializes in exterminating Neo-Mitochondion Creatures, i.e., mutants. The storyline can be classified as science fiction/horror, penned by popular Japanese novelist Hideaki Sena, sometimes referred to as the "Stephen King of Japan."
One of the game's strongest attributes is the superb musical score, which is comprised almost entirely of haunting ambient pieces. The music is composed well and fits in nicely with the overall atmosphere. On the visual side of things, Parasite Eve II manages to look stunning with realistic backdrops and beautifully rendered character models. Sound effects and visual effects are also done very well.
The game play in Parasite Eve II can best be described as real-time role-play, but with guns rather than swords (though there are also mêlée weapons available, such the Gunblade and Tonfa baton). Also, unlike in the original game, there are no random enemy encounters in Parasite Eve II, and once you defeat an enemy it cannot regenerate. The player earns Bounty points and Experience points after a successful battle, the former which can be used for purchasing useful items and upgrading the game's expansive arsenal of firearms and armor. Experience points can be used to release Aya's magical powers.
With its high production values, original game play, and intriguing science fiction storyline, Parasite Eve II is truly deserving of a place in any gamer's collection.
SCORE: 9/10 (Because there is no such thing as perfect.)
