Black Books (TV Series 2000–2004) Poster

(2000–2004)

Trivia

Bernard is inspired by a real bookshop owner in Dublin whom Dylan Moran described as "he looks like he's swallowed a cup of sour milk and peed himself at the same time. He has this green bilious expression, years of displeasure have shaped his face".
Manny's last name, Bianco (Italian for 'white'), is the obvious counterpart to Bernard Black.
"Katzenjammer" is a German slang word for annoying noise (like bad singing), literally meaning "cat-wailing".
Tamsin Greig was pregnant during the filming of series 1.
The bookshelf behind Bernard's desk has "Property of St. John and Red Cross Hospital Library Dept" stamped on it.
To be in someone's "Black Books" is to have fallen out of favour with them.

Fran pushes her new phone into Bernard's face and says that it has Web Access and a Camera. This is actually a joke about how annoying Mobile Users were seen at the time, a time when such features were unheard of. These features are now the standard.

The Mushroom in Bernard's hair resembles a Ringless Honey Mushroom, Armillaria Tabescens. Just because you find a mushroom in your hair, though, doesn't mean that it's necessarily going to be edible.
