17 times movies and TV shows were refused rights to songs

Louisa Mellor Jul 1, 2016

Not every artist is happy to have their song featured in a particular TV show or film. Here are 17 times the rights were refused...

It's not only political campaigns that inspire musical artists to exercise the power of veto on the use of their songs. For reasons of finance, reputation, ego, taste and more, the following TV shows and films weren't able to secure the use of the recordings they originally sought...

This Express piece quotes an Empire Magazine interview with Martin Scorsese’s long-time editor Thelma Schoonmaker in which she relates how the original plan was to have Frank Sinatra’s original recording of My Way play over the end credits of modern gangster classic Goodfellas instead of the Sid Vicious cover that was eventually used.

Sinatra would never let Marty use his music,” explains Schoonmaker, “which is too bad because Marty may »

MPAA changes rating of Kevin Smith’s Yoga Hosers to PG-13

27 April 2016 12:28 PM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Last week, Kevin Smith took to social media to announce that the Motion Picture Association of America had slapped an R-rating on his new film Yoga Hosers, owing to a cartoon drawing of a pair of testicles. Smith stated that he would appeal the decision, but he won’t have to, as he’s now revealed that the MPAA has changed its mind and granted the film a PG-13.

Holy shit! The #MPAA just canceled my @yogahosers appeals screening that was set for tomorrow. They said they re-watched the movie and now agree that it is, indeed, a PG-13! I don't have to cut anything out to secure the PG-13 rating either! Next up, we'll tour the kids movie in June and July (tour details coming soon) and release #YogaHosers in theaters right after #ComicCon! Many thanks to the #MPAA for the 180 degree turn! #KevinSmith #YogaHosers #harleyquinnsmith #lilyrosedepp

Kevin Smith’s Yoga Hosers gets R-rating over cartoon testicles

20 April 2016 1:34 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

It looks like Kevin Smith has run foul of the Motion Picture Association of America once again, with the filmmaker taking to Instagram to announce that his latest film Yoga-Hosers has been slapped with an R-rating. However, this time it’s not down to foul language or gratuitous nudity, but rather a cartoon drawing of a pair of testicles…

The #MPAA gave my kids movie @YogaHosers an R rating for a cartoony drawing of testicles on a book cover. So now, for the 4th time in my 22 year career, we will hold an appeals screening with the Motion Picture Association of America's ratings board and try to get the R overturned for a less severe (and far more appropriate) PG-13. I also ran afoul of the MPAA the first time I made a movie set in a convenience store, »

Monster Kid Spotlight: Kenneth Hall

18 March 2016 10:29 AM, PDT | FamousMonsters of Filmland | See recent Famous Monsters of Filmland news »

Like many children growing up in the 1960s, Kenneth Hall loved monsters. Ever since he was a toddler, his mother — who was an especially big fan of Vincent Price — took him and his brother to see films like The Brides Of Dracula, Curse Of The Werewolf, and The Pit And The Pendulum. And that was all it took. At age 10, Hall discovered Famous Monsters of Filmland, and with the help of the trusty TV Guide, he and his brother made a point to watch as many of the films they read about as they could, even if it meant sneaking out of bed and staying up late to catch a showing of The Deadly Mantis. Like many Monster Kids of his time, there was a now-or-never mentality that came with a lack of home video, but growing up in Jacksonville, Fl did give Hall an extra advantage. It was the »

Jason Mewes talks ‘Bling’ and ‘Mallrats 2’

4 March 2016 8:03 AM, PST | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

When was the last time you saw a movie about jewellery and robots? The answer to that unusual question is something Google Play are banking on for Bling, the first animated film to be distributed via the platform. Best of all it’s free!

Concerning the calamity that ensues when a hopeful man’s engagement surprise is mistakenly acquired by a supervillain, it features attention-grabbing elements such as positronic primate Kit, voiced by Jay and Silent Bob star Jason Mewes.

Putting on our best suit, and with our best inquiries boxed up and ready to be sprung, we took Mr Mewes to the nearest restaurant in the hope he’d accept our proposal. Along the way we couldn’t help but talk about his most famous role and working with friend and quietest Bob in history Kevin Smith for the past couple of decades…

Jason Mewes interview: Bling, Clerks III, MallBrats, superheroes

We spoke to actor and frequent Kevin Smith collaborator Jason Mewes about his new movies Bling, Yoga Hosers, MallBrats and Clerks III

Clerks is one of the movies that made me love movies, and so it was with more pre-interview nerves than usual that I waited on hold to connect with Jay actor Jason Mewes via a crackly international phone-line.

We were due to talk about the animated movie Bling - in which Mewes voices a robot monkey called Kit, who shirks his responsibilities as a theme park employee to help the main character (voiced by Taylor Kitsch) take down a super villain and propose to his girlfriend – but the memory of all the nights I’ve spent chuckling away to Jay and Silent Bob’s antics had put some serious fear into me.

I needn’t have worried, because Mewes proved to be a lovely chap to chat with, »

Exclusive: Jason Mewes tells us the latest info about for his next two Kevin Smith collaborations: MallBrats and Clerks III.

We spoke to cult figure and perennial View Askewniverse inhabitant Jason Mewes recently, primarily about the upcoming animated film Bling (in which he plays a robot monkey and aspiring superhero by the name of Kit).

In between banana-based anecdotes, Mewes was also happy to talk about his upcoming Kevin Smith collaborations – Mallrats sequel MallBrats, and the third instalment in the Clerks series.

“It looks like Clerks III, right now, is sort of put on the backburner ‘til maybe the end of next year”, Mewes explained. “We’re not sure, it’s sort of up in the air. But MallBrats, we’re hoping, will happen by the middle of this year. At the end of this year at the latest, hopefully.

“Yes, Jay and [Silent] Bob will definitely be in there”, Mewes confirmed, »

But they failed in their kidnapping scheme.

The actress had been waiting for an Uber ride outside of a Starbucks in Brentwood, California last week. The two unidentified men pulled up to Harley Quinn Smith in a large beige car and claimed that they were there to bring her to her intended destination. Here's what the actress had to say about the incident.

Kevin Smith responds to the negative reviews for Yoga Hosers

2 February 2016 11:00 AM, PST | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Kevin Smith’s second movie in his True North trilogy, Yoga Hosers, debuted at Sundance last week and was trashed by virtually every outlet and critic. The movie, which stars his daughter Harley Quinn Smith and Johnny Depp’s daughter Lily-Rose, was described by the director as “the movie I always wanted to see when I was a 12-year old girl”.

“I was at 3 screenings, and it played wonderfully,” he said on his Hollywood Babble-On podcast. “It was a wonderful experience watching the girls ascend and start doing interviews. People ate them up like candy, it was really fucking sweet. The critics on the other hand – holy fuck. Like I get it, the movie’s not for everyone. And based on what I read it’s not for anyone. But, wow. I was ready for it, but I didn’t read much. I just got a sense from everyone around me. »

It's just been announced at the Television Critics Association’s press tour that director Kevin Smith (Clerks, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, Mallrats The Walrus) will helm a future episode of The CW's The Flash. Smith is a lifelong comic book fan, and has written for both DC and Marvel in the past.
