Realistic depiction of the inadequate working conditions of Chinese scientists who are underpaid, overworked, poorly equipped, and unappreciated by foolish bureaucrats and many other people who have absolutely no idea about the importance of scientific research simply because such research can not yield immediate short term benefit in economic gains. The competition from foreign scientists were used to balance out the criticism to avoid the possible banning of the film.
