Indian cinema has given the world plenty of delights and is, rightly, praised by many for both its prolific output and the quality and energy of many superior spectacles on the silver screen. But, like any cinema industry, it has a share of both good and bad. Many people may feel that Mahakaal (aka The Monster) falls in to the latter category but I, personally, thought it was wonderful.

The story is just an Indian take on A Nightmare On Elm Street with plenty thrown in from a number of the sequels as well as the original movie. Even many of the the musical cues throughout (NOT the song and dance numbers) are almost lifted straight from the Wes Craven movie. The fact that other people are credited with the story and soundtrack is, for me, a bit cheeky and the credits really should just read "from the Wes Craven movie with extra bits thrown in by some folk".

Directors Shyam Ramsay and Tulsi Ramsay do deserve some credit for taking the concept of Freddy Krueger and squeezing it into some traditional Indian attire. There are some nice and surreal moments of horror (albeit in scenes more often than not lifted from the American movies) and the clash of ideas from Indian and American cinema isn't as jarring as you might expect.

Where the movie really falls down is in the lame comedy. Johnny Lever is the man given multiple roles for the sake of added humour and, while there are a few laughs squeezed from the material, the inane mugging and overdone pratfalls make for quite a groan-inducing experience at times.

Archana Puran Singh is a good enough leading lady, playing Anita (the girl who really discovers the truth about Freddy Kru . . . . I mean . . . . . ummmm . . . . the monster and sets out to stop him), and everyone else seems to do okay, whether they're being attacked in their dreams or leaping in to a groovy song and dance number.

The ending is even more preposterous than everything that precedes it, and those comedy moments really are groansome, but this remains a fun viewing experience and should certainly appeal to broad-minded fans of the sharp-gloved slasher icon.
