'The Great Gatsby' soundtrack and the rich history of the rock star composer

11 May 2013 4:24 PM, PDT | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

Much has been made of Jay-z’s involvement with Baz Lurhmann’s epic adaptation of The Great Gatsby. The music mogul has never before lent his name or his talents to a project in this way before (we’re not counting his “inspired by” American Gangster album). Despite the hype, this soundtrack collaboration is fundamentally safe (if seemingly off to a fast start on the charts.). Not only is The Great Gatsby a tent-pole blockbuster with an above-the-title director and major A-list talent, it’s a grandiose celebration of New York jazz age glamour and excess — which in some ways, »

Box Office: How Tom Cruise Stays on Top

21 April 2013 10:40 AM, PDT | Moviefone | See recent Moviefone news »

Even before Tom Cruise's "Oblivion" opened in North America on Thursday night, the 50-year-old must have been grinning his famous grin. Before the movie had sold a single ticket here, it was a surefire hit. In his native land, Cruise takes a lot of ribbing, whether for his headline-generating personal life (especially since 2005, the year of the couch-jump) or for the seeming shrinkage of his star-power (again, especially since 2005). The estimated $38.2 million "Oblivion" earned this weekend marked his biggest domestic opening since "Mission: Impossible III" seven years ago. Some will call it a comeback, others will call it a fluke or last hurrah from a middle-aged action hero desperately trying to hold on to his relevance in an industry that relentlessly moves on to the next big (young) thing. But the truth is, Cruise has been a remarkably consistent box office winner, even since he started raising eyebrows eight »

The Top 10 Dumbest Lines in Tom Cruise Movies

19 April 2013 9:00 AM, PDT | NextMovie | See recent NextMovie news »

We like Tom Cruise. Yes, the man be crazy, but he's also an endlessly charming rogue and a damn fine actor. But wow, does he sometimes have to say stupid things in his movies.

"Oblivion" has stunning production design and a sweet M83 score, but there's no doubt it contains at least one groan-inducing line of dialogue. Here are Tom Cruise's Top 10 most unfortunate quotes.

10. 'Vanilla Sky' (2001)

"I'll see you in another life … when we are both cats."

9. 'War of the Worlds' (2005)

"Look at the goddamn birds!"

8. 'Interview with the Vampire' (1994)

"You are a vampire who never knew what life was until it ran out in a big gush over your lips."

7. 'Days of Thunder' (1990)

"All right, tell me what's going on, tell me what's going on. I'm Blind, goddammit!"

6. 'Mission: Impossible II' (2000)

"We just rolled up a snowball and threw it into Hell. »

Mad Max's Weekend Movie Guide: 'Oblivion' & More

19 April 2013 7:00 AM, PDT | NextMovie | See recent NextMovie news »

"I'll see you in another life when we are both cats." –Tom Cruise, 'Vanilla Sky'

Greetings from the apocalypse! You might think that this particular Mad Max would enjoy watching Tom Cruise fight evil robots in a future nuclear-blasted wasteland, but Nope! "Oblivion" is a dud, though that doesn't mean we can't make it through the next few days as long as we stick together and don't cross the Dmz. Smoke 'em if ya got 'em, troops, we're goin' in …

Friday, April 19

Pow! In Theaters

Xenu's own Tom Cruise returns to comfortable sci-fi territory this week with "Oblivion," which I will henceforth refer to as "The Matrix Redressed." Cruise is the only living boy in post-apocalyptic New York, where he and a stuffy British chick (Andrea Riseborough, natch) maintain giant water vacuums when they're not having PG-13 swimming pool sex … that is, until the mysterious Olga Kurylenko arrives from outer space. »

Film review: Oblivion - Lovely view, but haven't you and I already met on another planet?

13 April 2013 11:30 AM, PDT | The Independent | See recent The Independent news »

Twelve years ago, Cameron Crowe took an offbeat Spanish psychodrama, Open Your Eyes, and remade it as Vanilla Sky, a big and glossy Tom Cruise vehicle. Oblivion has a similar feel. It's not a remake of a specific film (although some might disagree – more on that later), but it does come across as a brain-teasing indie oddity that's been super-sized by Cruise's involvement. »

Cameron Crowe's untitled Sony film may add Rachel McAdams to Bradley Cooper, Emma Stone cast McAdams would apparently play a former love of Cooper's character in the film from the helmer of Jerry Maguire, Vanilla Sky, Elizabethtown and We Bought a Zoo. Scott Rudin produces the Sony Pictures release which at this point, has managed to keep its plot under tight wraps. Of course, those who saw The Wedding Crashers, know that Cooper played McAdams boyfriend in the 2005 film which starred Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn. According to Deadline, the movie is a similar brew of past Crowe films, mixing in romance and comedy. »

The James Clayton Column: If Tom Cruise were consigned to oblivion

11 April 2013 6:23 AM, PDT | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

Feature James Clayton 12 Apr 2013 - 06:17

The release of Oblivion leaves James pondering the hole left in cinema had Tom Cruise never existed...

Sci-fi thriller Oblivion has arrived in cinemas, and that means that audiences have a fresh sci-fi blockbuster to enjoy. Sometimes snubbed, misunderstood and casually dismissed to sulk in its own tech-interfaced ghetto, the genre has got a bit of a (micro)chip on its shoulder. It's therefore always nice to see original science fiction stories making waves on the movie scene and reaching wider cinema audiences.

I'm hoping that Oblivion is embraced and receives a positive reception to follow in the footsteps of District 9, Source Code and Looper, to name a trio of recent critical and commercial smashes.

Of course, the crucial draw of Oblivion for many isn't its vision of a future Earth ravaged by alien warfare, overseen by survivors who inhabit floating towns and »

Top 10 Best Tom Cruise Movies

1 April 2013 7:12 AM, PDT | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

"Millions of galaxies of hundreds of millions of stars, in a speck on one in a blink. That’s us, lost in space." — Vincent, Collateral

Though he's most widely known for his action movies — the Mission: Impossible movies, in particular — superstar actor Tom Cruise has also starred in a handful of sci-fi movies in his career, including War of the Worlds (2005), his highest grossing domestic release to date. After an eight-year hiatus from sci-fi, Cruise will return to the genre on April 19th in Oblivion, a post-apocalyptic epic from director Joseph Kosinski (Tron: Legacy) in which Cruise plays one of the last drone (read: clone) workers on an Earth that is all but abandoned following a devastating war with an alien race known as the Scavs.

In anticipation of Oblivion's imminent release, we thought this would be a great time to look back on Cruise's rather extensive filmography to determine, »

Tom Cruise and Morgan Freeman face 'Oblivion' in new posters -- Exclusive

27 February 2013 12:43 PM, PST | EW - Inside Movies | See recent EW.com - Inside Movies news »

Oblivion is taking Tom Cruise to a now-familiar place — a sci-fi setting where a disconnected soul confronts hard choices and a mystery that makes him question his assumptions about the world around him. That was the case in Minority Report, Vanilla Sky and War of the Worlds and it’s also the case in the April 12 film that stars Cruise as Jack Harper, a repair worker in a distant future where  (like Wall-e or the Maytag repairman) his days are defined by his solitary duties. The film is directed by Joseph Kosinski (Tron: Legacy) and based his graphic novel.

Extended Thoughts on ‘Herbie, the Love Bug’

Herbie, The Love Bug

Written by Arthur Alsberg and Don Nelson

Starring Dean Jones, Patricia Harty, Nicky Katt, Larry Linville, Claudia Wells

When people speak of the possibility of alternate dimensions, they leave out the one closest to us all. We like to imagine a universe so similar to our own, nearly identical to the world in which we live if not for one difference. Maybe in one dimension, Bill Clinton was ousted from office, not just thrown up for impeachment. Maybe in another dimension, HD-DVD won the high-definition home-media war instead of Blu-ray. Or maybe, in some beautiful reality, Scott Norwood didn’t miss that field goal in the Super Bowl against the New York Giants. The possibilities are tantalizing because they are literally endless. In all the wonder and curiosity, however, most of us fail to recognize that there already exists another universe snuggled up tightly to ours, »

> Mark Wahlberg interview: Broken City, Ted and Transformers 4

Hollywood filmmakers have long held a love affair with New York. From Kong scaling the Empire State Building with Fay Wray clutched in his hand, to Tom Cruise roaming through a deserted Times Square in Vanilla Sky, The City That Never Sleeps has provided a glamorous backdrop on the big screen.

This week sees the UK release of Mark Wahlberg's latest movie Broken City, an old-school thriller that cuts through the streets of Manhattan as a conflicted private detective uncovers a conspiracy that runs into the upper echelons of New York politics.
Wahlberg believes the city makes for a good movie backdrop due to its ability to reflect both glamour and grittiness.

With that in mind, Digital Spy has put together an interactive Google Map looking at 10 iconic movie locations in Manhattan. Click the pinpoints below to revisit some of »

Oscars: Seth MacFarlane's best, worst and most controversial jokes

25 February 2013 2:57 AM, PST | Digital Spy | See recent Digital Spy - Movie News news »

Seth MacFarlane's debut as host of the Oscars inevitably proved divisive. Some enjoyed his more risqué humour, while others found his songs about "boobs" and 'controversial' zingers more childish than funny.

If you didn't catch the show, Digital Spy has rounded up MacFarlane's gags so that you can make up your own mind on whether the Family Guy creator was a hit or a miss.

1. On Ben Affleck's snub in the 'Best Director' category

"Argo tells the previously classified story about an American hostage rescue in post-revolutionary Iran. The story was so top secret that the film's director is unknown to the Academy."

2. On Daniel Day-Lewis's method acting

"Daniel Day-Lewis, your process fascinates me. You were totally 100% in character as Lincoln during the making of the movie… So when you saw a cell phone, would you have to go, 'Oh my God, what's that?!' If you »

A rousing musical number called “We Saw Your Boobs.” William Shatner, as Star Trek’s Capt. James T. Kirk, beaming back from the future to declare the show a total disaster. A reenactment of the movie Flight done entirely with sock puppets. And a whole lot of jokes that skirted along—and sometimes right over—the edge of bad taste. Love it or hate it, Seth MacFarlane’s turn as Oscar host will definitely be talked about—which is almost certainly what the Academy was banking on when they hired the man behind Family Guy for the job. Staff List: Steven Soderbergh’s Best Films

10 February 2013 12:43 PM, PST | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

Steven Soderbergh became the poster child for new American independent cinema in the 90′s, after winning the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival for his debut feature Sex, Lies, & Videotape. Soderbergh spent the better part of the ensuing decade, directing small idiosyncratic films, and often wearing many hats including producer, screenwriter, cinematographer and editor. Eventually the director entered into a period that saw him make commercially satisfying films; most notably Ocean’s Eleven, Erin Brockovich and Traffic, the latter of which earned him an Oscar for Best Director. Despite his box office success, Steven Sodberergh continued to experiment with such films as the ensemble piece Full Frontal, the smart and ambiguous Solaris, the low-budget Bubble and the four hour long epic, Che. There are very few filmmakers who are able to keep their feet firmly planted in the commercial world, while conserving their independent spirit. With his last »

Inside Llewyn Davis: watch the trailer for the new Coen brothers' film

24 January 2013 9:29 AM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Feasts your eyes and ears on the first look at the new film from the Coen brothers, about a freewheeling folk singer in 60s New York

If you've ever stared at the album sleeve for The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan and thought it would be even better if it was, like, moving and talking and stuff, then Inside Llewyn Davis may be the movie to beat the band. Who cares if Vanilla Sky tried the exact same trick a decade or so back? This time it's been done with less Tom Cruise.

Watch the trailer here.

Ostensibly Inside Llewyn Davis is a film about a musician named Llewyn Davis, a "folk singer with a cat" who cuts a dash and cuts a disc in early 60s Us. And yet the evidence suggests that Dylan is very much the film's guiding spirit, and the Freewheelin' sleeve its glimmering north star. The trailer »

75 Years of Manic Pixie Dream Girls - Video Supercut

A film critic by the name of Nathan Rabin coined the phrase "Manic Pixie Dream Girl" as a way to describe Kirsten Dunst’s role in Cameron Crowe's Elizabethtown. He described this Manic Pixie Dream Girl as being "that bubbly, shallow cinematic creature that exists solely in the fevered imaginations of sensitive writer-directors to teach broodingly soulful young men to embrace life and its infinite mysteries and adventures." Here's a great video compilation that pays tribute to 75 years of these type of female characters. The movie comes from Flavorwire, and it turned out great!
