George Lazenby and Diane Craig investigate a murder
2 August 2016 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

In my view, "The Newman Shame" (1978) is overrated significantly by the 44 IMDb voters at 7.4. I see it as a sub-par TV-detective movie. Since 6 is average, I rate this at 5.

I think honestly that what you can expect here is a slackly paced and written movie with really no exceptional characteristics. It does have George Lazenby who has a certain laid-back charm and rings a favorable James Bond bell, and it does have a perky Diane Craig who assists him and takes the initiative in trying to find out how Lazenby's friend died and why. Two veteran actors also handle their parts very nicely, and they are Joan Bruce, the victim's wife, and Alwyn Kurts, his friend. It does have a different location in Perth. The movie is hurt quite a lot by the procession of fadeouts and absent commercials. This makes the absence of tension and emotion even more marked. No one seems to get very worked up over what goes on. Lazenby is not given much to do independently as a detective, the major clue being a voice print. Craig does more to follow up one line of inquiry, a movie of the victim at an orgy (all suggested, none shown), than Lazenby does. The lines of inquiry more or less fizzle out as this limps to its conclusion. A rating of 5 means it's not a complete bust, but I wouldn't expect anywhere near as much as a 7.4 suggests.
