Danny Trejo Talks Machete and More!

22 December 2010 11:29 AM, PST | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

His face is instantly recognizable. His deft portrayals of characters both noble and ignoble have elevated him from “that guy with the tattoos” status to a bankable commodity.

The parts he’s played are just as memorable as he is: the knife-wielding Navajas from Desperado, the toothy vampire bartender Razor Charlie from From Dusk Till Dawn, Johnny “Johnny-23” Baca from Con Air, Machete from the Spy Kids series, the lovable biker Slim from Bubble Boy, the “Mexican/Mexican’t” Cucuy from Once Upon a Time in Mexico, Rondo from The Devil's Rejects, Cuchillo from Predators, and now … the illustrious Machete. His name is Danny Trejo, and while you may not know his name, you definitely know his face.

Director Robert Rodriguez – a longtime supporter of Danny’s – turned what might have been a gag trailer for a lost biker revenge film into a media and cultural juggernaut. Machete, made for roughly $10 million, »

Part 2: Jake Gyllenhaal on "Zodiac", "Donnie Darko" and "Brokeback"

6 October 2010 3:45 PM, PDT | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

If you missed my Tribeca Film article about Jake Gyllenhaal's New Yorker festival interview, open it up and dig in. But here on home turf, why not share quotes I couldn't fit into that overview? I know some of you probably suffer as do I with "too much Jake is not enough" so here's some cinematic memories to temporarily satiate your Gyllenhaalism.

Talking about Donnie Darko, Zodiac and Brokeback Mountain -- by most estimations the high points of his career -- made him extra reflective. If this past weekend's event was any indication he understands as well as anyone that these are the key titles. If Love and Other Drugs is the breakout success most seem to be expecting, it'll replace Zodiac in his key trio; He's not the star of that film anyway since that film's movie star is unquestionably David Fincher. Fincher isn't onscreen but that hardly »

Want More Danny Trejo? Go Watch 'Champion'

8 September 2010 4:45 PM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

A lot has been said about Danny Trejo's face (Current TV's Brett Erlich memorably said that "Trejo's face looks like it's wearing another face"), and not just because its leathery crags and valleys make it seem less like human skin and more like something it takes Greg Nicotero two hours to apply every morning. Danny Trejo's face is such a focal point because until Machete it's all that Danny Trejo has ever been to most people. But when I was 11, I thought of him as my favorite babysitter. From Heat to Desperado to From Dusk Till Dawn his grizzled mug would show up in just about everything I would pull from the local video store, and when my parents went out to dinner or worked late, it was often Trejo who was left to tuck me in. So despite usually playing criminals, killers, and rapists (Johnny 23!), he's »

Marley Shelton Is the New 'Scream' Deputy, Alongside Cop Adam Brody

1 July 2010 1:01 PM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Though I was digging the idea of Michelle Rodriguez replacing Lake Bell in Scream 4, as Perri suggested in a recent post, or reader Breeze's idea of a little Clea DuVall, neither of these ladies are taking over the big shoes left by one Deputy Dewey. They're going an entirely different route, to a woman who moved up the ranks from Bubble Boy to face Planet Terror and struggle as one of the Women in Trouble. Yep, the brown-haired ladies are out, and blondie Marley Shelton is in, with a little help from Adam Brody and comic relief from Erik Knudsen.

Jeremy Renner Brushes Teeth in Starbucks Before the Oscars

22 June 2010 1:02 AM, PDT | Celebrity Mania | See recent Celebrity Mania news »

Jeremy Renner had to brush his teeth in Starbucks before the Oscars. The 39-year-old star was nominated for a Best Actor Academy Award for his role in "The Hurt Locker" at this year's ceremony but admits he wasn't prepared for any of the glamorous events around that time because he was in the middle of reconstructing a house.

"I was brushing my teeth in Starbucks because we didn't have any plumbing," Jeremy, who runs a property renovating business with his friend, said when speaking about the awards season. "I remember sleeping under painter's plastic because it was so dusty. I had to create this tent, like Bubble Boy, around my bed. I had to put holes in it so I could breathe. It's kind of pathetic."

Despite winning critical acclaim for his acting, Jeremy says he set up the business as he knows being an actor doesn't always pay well »

International Despicable Me Poster

22 April 2010 2:00 AM, PDT | Filmofilia | See recent Filmofilia news »

Illumination Entertainment and Universal have unleashed a new international poster for their upcoming animated movie Despicable Me.

In a happy suburban neighborhood surrounded by white picket fences with flowering rose bushes, sits a black house with a dead lawn. Unbeknownst to the neighbors, hidden beneath this home is a vast secret hideout. Surrounded by a small army of minions, we discover Gru (voiced by Steve Carell), planning the biggest heist in the history of the world. He is going to steal the moon (Yes, the moon!) in Universal’s new 3-D CGI feature, “Despicable Me.”

Gru delights in all things wicked. Armed with his arsenal of shrink rays, freeze rays, and battle-ready vehicles for land and air, he vanquishes all who stand in his way. Until the day he encounters the immense will of three little orphaned girls who look at him and see something that no one else has ever seen: a potential Dad. »
