- Thankamma is heartbroken when her lover Shivaraman abandons her for his duties as a sailor. She marries another man and tries to settle down, but she learns that she is expecting Shivaraman's child.
- Thankamma (Sharada) and Shivaraman (Prem Nazir) are a young couple in love. Shivaraman leaves to work on a ship even though Thankamma pleads with him not to go. She gives him an ultimatum that if he leaves she will not be waiting for him when he comes back. A wealthy old merchant Damodaran (Sathyan) wants to marry Thankamma knowing that she loves someone else. Due to much persuasion from her relatives she agrees to the marriage. They get married and on the wedding night Damodaran tells Thankamma that he only wants her tender loving care till he dies, at which time she will become very wealthy and can find someone who is young and marry and have a family. Shivaraman comes back and finds that Thankamma is already married. Disappointed he returns to his job. Thankamma finds out that she is pregnant through her relationship with Shivaraman. Instead of being upset, Damodaran is elated as his wife is having a child though not his own, and there is a successor in his family. Thankamma gives birth and all of them are living happily. Shivaraman finds out that he has a son and comes to visit Thankamma. Thankamma sends him away saying it is her and her husband's child. The child grows up to be about 4. One day when the family goes for an outing, Shivaraman's friend takes the child saying he will introduce him to his real father. Thankamma is frantic as she cannot find her son. She finds out that the child is in the ship with his father and runs to get him. Meanwhile Damodaran thinks Thankamma has left him taking the baby and has a heart attack. He returns home. When Thankamma comes back, she finds out that her husband was taken sick and rushes home with son and Shivaraman. She reaches in time and Damodaran is happy to see her and son. With his last breath he reunites the family and asks them to live happily once he is gone.—AT
