Power dehumanizes, 3 April 2005
7/10
Author: DwightFry from Burela, Lugo, Spain

Very interesting, if flawed, study on power and its consequences on human beings, on how today's oppressors can be tomorrow's oppressed, and on how no matter who is in command, there's always room for revenge and crimes of state. Carlos, son of a minister of the Government, sees how some revolutionary friends of him, including his girlfriend, are arrested and will be tortured and ultimately killed. He asks his father, Don Justo, for help, but Don Justo orders them killed instead. Carlos leaves home to join the Revolution, but is arrested by brutish Colonel Páez, along with Octavio, who is the boyfriend of Laura, sister of Carlos. Don Justo has the opportunity of having both of them killed, but saves their lives instead.

Two years after, the Revolution has triumphed and both Carlos and Octavio have important positions in the new Government. Now it's Don Justo who's the outlaw. Will they get him arrested or will they help him? Adequate to good acting all around for a film that's quite rough and unpolished, yet mostly effective. Its best virtue is that it doesn't defend any political system, depicting them all as opportunities for the man to be a wolf to the man (kind of like Hergé's classic "Tintin and the Picaros", in which a dictator is overthrown by a revolutionary that gets to become another dictator). The torture scene is rather graphic and disturbing, including rape and disembodied eyeballs. Recommended, if only as an essay on the human condition. 7/10.
