Filmmaker Phil Noyce ("The Quiet American," "Dead Calm") is concluding a deal to direct multiple episodes of HBO's six-hour mini-series event "American Lion" which begins shooting in October.

Sean Penn will play Andrew Jackson, the 7th U.S. President who won the popular vote but lobbied fiercely to abolish the electoral college because he believed the process to be corrupt. He also signed the infamous Indian Removal Act.

The story is based on Jon Meacham's Pulitzer-Prize winning novel of the same title, and Robert V. Remini's biography of Jackson. Matt Jacobson, Doug Miro and Carlo Bernard will produce for Lionsgate Television.
