42 scored the best opening day ever for a baseball movie, while Scary Movie 5 showed some franchises are better left dead. The Jackie Robinson biopic debuted to an estimated $9.1 million from 3,003 locations on Friday. That's easily the best start ever for a baseball movie ahead of The Benchwarmers ($6.8 million) and Moneyball ($6.7 million). Assuming it has normal drops*and with an "A+" CinemaScore, there's no reason to expect otherwise*the movie is on pace for around $25 million for the three-day frame, which would make it the first baseball movie ever to open north of $20 million. In second place, Scary Movie 5 tanked with $5.5 million at 3,402 theaters. That sets a new low for the Scary Movie franchise behind Scary Movie 2 ($7.2 million), and is off 71 percent from Scary Movie 4's $19 million opening day at the same time in 2006. Finally, it's noticeably lower than January horror spoof A Haunted House ($6.8 million), which didn't have any brand recognition. »

We begin this evening’s Movie News After Dark shenanigans with Captain America stepping into the world of S.H.I.E.L.D for his tour in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. It continues with plenty of movie chat, including great baseball flicks, Scary Movie 2, walking out of the theater and Vin Diesel driving a radio-controlled car. Or as we call it around here, just another Tuesday night. The Best Baseball Movies – The Playlist gets into the opening day spirit (and the fact that 42 is hitting theaters) with a list of great baseball movies. Yes, of course A League of Their Own is on there. I wouldn’t link to it, otherwise. Marry, F*ck, Kill with Elisabeth Moss – First, Mad Men uber-cutie Elisabeth Moss did a great photoshoot and interview with GQ. During which she played a game of “Marry, F*ck, Kill” with the men of Sterling Cooper Draper Price. Gosh-dammit »

Warning: Calling the following piece an "Idiot's Guide" is a bit of a misnomer. You may or may not be aware of what happens in the "Scary Movie" movies, but there's no way you will emerge from reading this a smarter person overall. I just watched all four "Scary Movie" movies consecutively and my brain is currently curled up in a ball shivering in a far corner of my skull, asking what it did to deserve that.
That said, it is true that you will know more about the "Scary Movie" franchise — a Lot more — after having read this piece. We here at NextMovie would hate to see you go into "Scary Movie 5" without having a lick of knowledge about the first four movies. Imagine the embarrassment in front of your friends! "Ugh, you didn't know that The Oracle, played by Queen Latifah in a spoof of 'The Matrix, »

It's Thursday. Friday's still quite a few hours away, and you're looking for something to help you pass your time. We totally hear you. The Internet has become a veritable theme park of time-killing activities, and the following one is a treat for sure!
As per the Pajiba website...
"Are you familiar with the movie and television trope in which someone is unexpectedly hit by a bus or other large vehicle? I’m sure that two or three instances of it immediately come to mind (and they’re assuredly in the video). We see it all the time (and it’s almost always effective), but I had no idea just how often it is employed until the noted video editor behind Harry Hanrahan compiled practically every instance ever of the trope into this supercut. It’s one of those brilliant video edits that blows up the trope, exposes it for »

A Haunted House marks Wayans returning to writing horror parodies after the atrociously bad Scary Movie 2. The result is surprisingly not bad and better than it has any right to be. This one tries to parody the recent found footage horror flick craze by focusing on movies like Paranormal Activity (clearly the main inspiration for this movie) The Devil Inside and The Last Exorcism. »

When actor/comedy writer Marlon Wayans, along with his older brothers Keenan Ivory and Shawn, started spoofing the horror movie genre at the turn of the century, they created a cinematic gold mine with the “Scary Movie” franchise. Fast-forward through a barrage of sequels in the last decade, one would think Marlon would have become tired doing the same shtick. Well, he wasn’t; simply because he stepped away from the horror movie spoofing racket after “Scary Movie 2” in 2001. Yet while watching the most recent batch of haunted products, Wayans’ horror spoofing fire was reignited. And he then built “A Haunted House,” which opens its sarcastic doors this Friday across [ Read More ]

The movie parody game has gone through a lot of changes in the last few decades. With A Haunted House about to hit theaters, followed by Scary Movie 5 in April and The Starving Games sometime later this year, things can get confusing. It seems like a good time to look at the big movers and shakers of the parody genre and where they stand, quality-wise. The Wayans Brothers Films Scary Movie, Scary Movie 2, Don't Be a Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood Who Are They? Typically, the modern Wayans brothers parody film stars Marlon and Shawn Wayans with Keenan Ivory Wayans doing something behind the scenes, whether it be producing, writing or directing. Higher profile Wayans brother, Damon Wayans, usually sits these out. Are They Good...

You know, this whole reviewing horror movies gig may seem like a gas, but truth be told, it’s a pretty tiring lifestyle. I love it, and wouldn’t trade it for the world, don’t get me wrong, but for every film that absolutely scares the piss out of me or floors me with creativity, I’ve got to deal with barely tolerable bottom of the barrel garbage instead of doing something productive towards humanity.
A Haunted House unfortunately is the latter in that scenario, attempting to turn found footage horror films on their head with edgy situational comedy, but instead relies on immature potty humor and sexual innuendoes thought up by child-like minds who probably still laugh at the word “duty” (hehehe), ignoring what real satirical fun could have been drawn from such pitiful source movies.
Ripping off films like The Devil Inside, The Last Exorcism, Paranormal Activity, »
