Brilliant staging of great masterwork
28 January 2006 | by (London, UK) – See all my reviews

A seminal staging in the history of the new Glyndebourne. Director Deborah Warner's vaguely contemporary production hints at abstraction with its minimal sets and character-focus. Into this comes a truly magnificent cast: the Page/Cachemaille servant and master double-act is entirely absorbing irrespective of the singing; Hillevi Martinpelto, Juliana Banse and John-Mark Ainsley are the vocal pick of a cast in which it's unfair to single singers out.

Such a success usually comes through a successful ensemble. Indeed this extends to the pit, an impressive debut from Yakov Kreizberg (who, extraordinarily, was nursing a cracked collar-bone at the time of the performance run). This is as good a reproduction of Mozart's great masterpiece as you could choose to get on video. 8/10
