We are leaving Kubrick behind and fast approaching Hyams. If you get that reference, go grab yourself a cookie. It is time for us to reflect back on the decade that was. On January 1st, 2000, Disney released Fantasia 2000. On Wednesday, December 30th, 2009, The White Ribbon is set to bow. Between the release of these two films, thousands of films came and went, and some of them were far more memorable than others. It was a long trek getting this list together, but here are our collective top 100 films of the past decade.

Remember Jim Carrey in Liar, Liar, where he forces himself to tell the truth for 24 hours? Well, here Jim Carrey forces himself to answer yes to any request, for a year. Which is upping the ante somewhat, but doesn't make it a better film. This is a return to the manic, gurning, not-very-funny Carrey, as if The Truman Show, Eternal Sunshine etc hadn't happened. Just say no.

The latest film from the Oscar-winning director, currently under house arrest in Switzerland, will be unveiled alongside Martin Scorsese's Shutter Island
The big star of next year's Berlin international film festival may yet prove to be noticeable by his absence – the new picture by Roman Polanski has been selected to premiere at the event, but the director remains in detention in Switzerland.
Polanski's drama, now called The Ghost Writer, is based on a novel by Robert Harris. It tells the tale of a writer recruited to help a disgraced British prime minister produce his memoirs against the backdrop of a possible indictment at the international criminal court. The film stars Pierce Brosnan as the statesman and Ewan McGregor as his hired author. Kim Cattrall and Olivia Williams take supporting roles.

Zurich -- Switzerland will decide next year whether to extradite film director Roman Polanski to the U.S. for sentencing over a 1977 case of unlawful sex with a minor, the Justice Ministry said on Wednesday.
"There will be nothing more this year. At the earliest we'll make an announcement early next year as to whether the criteria for extradition have been met," said Folco Galli, a spokesman for the Justice Ministry.
Galli said Polanski would remain under house arrest at his chalet in the skiing resort of Gstaad until then.
The 76-year-old Oscar-winning director, who holds dual French and Polish citizenship, was arrested at the request of the U.S. when he flew into Switzerland on Sept. 26 to receive a lifetime achievement prize at a film festival.

Fugitive director Roman Polanski could be back in the United States by January to face sentencing for having sex with a 13-year-old girl more than 32 years ago. There is no guarantee, however, that he will serve time in jail. Polanski’s lawyers in Los Angeles are said to be working furiously to prevent jail time for the aging director. Polanski directed and wrote the screenplay for the 1968 horror movie “Rosemary’s Baby,” starring Mia Farrow. Before winning the Oscar for “The Pianist,” he was nominated for best director twice for 1974’s “Chinatown,” starring Jack Nicholson, Faye Dunaway, and John Huston and 1979’s “Tess,” which ironically is about an older man’s lust for an underage girl. »

From the city that once called in the bomb squad to defuse a prank from the creators of the Aqua Teen Hunger Force movie, their cinema critics have given back a little love to those that kept them safe from that little stunt.
With the exception of one category, the Boston Society of Film Critics have not exactly been dominant in forecasting locks in terms of Oscar nominations. But one film did dominate this year's selections and has, for the moment, overtaken Up In The Air (which was shut out in Beantown) for the most victories in total awards to date. Kathryn Bigelow's The Hurt Locker won five awards including Picture, Director, Actor, Cinematography and Editing. Taking Wall-e's share of the tie with Slumdog Millionaire out of the equation, Boston's last seven choices for Best Picture have gone onto an Oscar nomination and the last three have proved victorious. »

Film director confined to property in Gstaad while Swiss authorities decide whether to extradite him to the Us
Roman Polanski today began his house arrest on $4.5m (£2.7m) bail, arriving in the Swiss resort of Gstaad in a police convoy.
The film director was welcomed by his wife, Emmanuelle Seigner, and his children, Elvis, nine, and 16-year-old Morgane, at his Alpine chalet.
He arrived in the resort after persuading the Swiss authorities to end his two-month spell in a Swiss prison pending their decision on whether to extradite him to the Us in a 32-year-old sex case.
Two police cars went into the chalet's garage, which has direct access to the house.
Polanski was unseen behind tinted windows, but police confirmed to the Associated Press that he was in one of the vehicles.

Incarcerated moviemaker Roman Polanski has been relocated from a Swiss jail prior to his release on Friday.
The Pianist director, who was arrested in September on a 32-year-old international sexual assault charge, will serve out his days while he awaits possible extradition to America under home arrest at his luxury chalet in Gstaad after posting $4.5 million (GBP2.8 million) bail.
It is not known where Polanski will spend his final hours behind bars. He was moved for security reasons, according to officials.
Authorities in California are keen to conclude their case against Polanski, who fled to France on the eve of his sentencing in 1978 and has lived in exile ever since.
He had already pleaded guilty to having unlawful sexual intercourse with a 13-year-old girl at a Hollywood party. »

Geneva -- Authorities acted to protect Roman Polanski from public attention Thursday by moving him from a Zurich area jail to an undisclosed location before his transfer to house arrest in the Swiss Alps.
Polanski was taken from the jail in Winterthur for "security reasons and personal protection," Justice Ministry spokesman Folco Galli said.
Galli declined to say where the 76-year-old director was being held. But he told The Associated Press that Polanski was still expected to be taken to his chalet in the luxury resort of Gstaad on Friday afternoon.
"This doesn't change anything in principle," Galli said. "He will still be transferred tomorrow."
Polanski won't be allowed to leave his house while Switzerland decides whether to extradite him to the U.S. for having sex in 1977 with a 13-year-old girl. He will have to wear an electronic monitoring bracelet.

Zurich -- Swiss authorities will not release Roman Polanski into house arrest at his luxury Alpine chalet for a few more days, the French consul said Monday.
After visiting the director in jail, French Consul Jean-Luc Faure-Tournaire told waiting journalists that Polanski was well but his release might not happen for a few more days.
A spokesman for the Swiss Justice Department declined to give any time, but said Polanski still needed to deposit his bail of $4.5 million and that electronic monitoring needed to be set up at his chalet in Gstaad.

Roman Polanski received preferential treatment behind bars in Switzerland, according to the filmmaker's former cellmate.
The director was arrested and jailed in September in relation to 32-year-old child sex charges in America, and he's currently fighting extradition to the U.S.
Earlier this week (begs23Nov09), Polanski was granted a bail request and will spend Christmas and the New Year under house arrest at his alpine chalet in Gstaad.
And now his former cellmate, Yussi Akram, has told a Swiss radio station the exiled The Pianist director was the envy of fellow prisoners - because he was allowed to call his wife and attorneys frequently.
And his cell was equipped with a special emergency button he could use to summon guards.
But the moviemaker's longtime friend Janusz Morgenstern has told a Polish radio network that Polanski's two-month prison stay has taken its toll on the director: "His fear of the U.S. verges on panic and he has lived with that fear for so long that it's become obsessive."
Morgenstern reveals his pal has become severely depressed and has lost a considerable amount of weight behind bars.
Polanski was found guilty of molesting a 13-year-old girl at a Hollywood party in 1977. He fled to Paris, France on the eve of sentencing in 1978. »

Roman Polanski has been granted $4.5 million bail, clearing the way for the fugitive director to move within days from a Swiss jail to house arrest and electronic monitoring at his Alpine resort chalet. The justice minister said Wednesday she saw no reason to appeal the surprise decision by the Swiss Criminal Court. Polanski would have to remain in Switzerland as authorities assess whether to extradite him to the U.S. for having sex in Los Angeles in 1977 with a 13-year-old girl.Ministry spokesman Folco Galli said the final decision on transferring Polanski to his chalet in the Swiss resort of Gstaad would be made "quickly.""The 76-year-old appellant is married and the father of two minors," the court said as it considered Polanski's offer of a cash bail secured by his apartment in Paris. Sorry, Kirstie Alley. It seems the Free Roman Polanski Brigade has won out. Or has it? The Swiss Criminal Court today accepted the Oscar-winning filmmaker's $4.5 million cash bail deal that would allow him to leave a Zurich jail for house arrest and electronic monitoring at his Swiss chalet. Naturally, Swiss authorities aren't so keen on the idea of letting their prize catch go, given his history of running from the law. Two previous requests by his attorneys were rejected outright. This time, however, the price was right. While the justice minister says he won't appeal the bail decision, the 72-year-old The Pianist director will likely remain in lockup for a couple more days before being »

The Hollywood Foreign Press will bestow its honorary Cecil B. DeMille Award to Martin Scorsese during the Golden Globes on January 17, according to Variety.
Scorsese, who is a few days from his 67th birthday, is responsible for several movies legendary for their gritty, sometimes expressionistic, portrayals of violence. These include Mean Streets, Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, and GoodFellas.
He also crafted many underrated gems that explored various social and cultural issues. These include The King of Comedy (the obsessions of celebrity culture), The Last Temptation of Christ (a non-Gospel, first-person telling of Jesus's internal struggle), Kundun (the life of the Dalai Lama), and Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore (the trials of single-motherhood).
The DeMille Award recognizes the lifetime achievement of various actors and directors. Recent recipients include Steven Spielberg, Robin Williams, and Al Pacino. Earlier recipients include Walt Disney, Fred Astaire, Judy Garland, and Alfred Hitchcock, among others. You can »

Berlin -- Director Roman Polanski may take his chances before a U.S. court to avoid sitting for months or even years in a Swiss jail awaiting extradition, one of his lawyers said Wednesday.
A Swiss court this week denied bail to the 76-year-old director, who was arrested in Zurich last month on a sex charge dating back to 1977. U.S authorities have until the end of November to request his extradition. If Polanski decides to challenge it, the process could go on for years before he faces justice.
"If the procedure drags on, it is not impossible that Roman Polanski could choose to go and explain himself in the United States, where there are some arguments in his favor," Polanski's lawyer Georges Kiejman told French radio on Wednesday.
In 1977 Polanski pleaded guilty to having unlawful sex with a 13-year-old girl. He spent 42 days in prison undergoing psychological testing. But the director fled the U. »

Berlin -- A Swiss court Tuesday denied bail to Roman Polanski, meaning the 76-year-old director will remain in custody while he awaits a ruling on his extradition to the United States for having unlawful sex with a minor back in 1977.
The court said Polanski, who fled the U.S. in 1978 before he was tried on the charge, was still too much a flight risk. Something Polanski's French lawyer Herve Temime fervently denies.
"What everyone forgets is that if Roman Polanski fled 32 years ago, it was because he felt betrayed by the American justice system," Temime told Swiss television. "What one forgets is that 32 years ago, no one in the world wanted him to go to jail, not even for one day. For the past 32 years he has demonstrated to what extent he is not a danger to anyone, to what extent he is not a 'sex criminal' as one often hears. »

Roman Polanski is reportedly undergoing medical treatment, according to Reuters. His lawyer Herve Temime told Reuters, "All I know is that he has been taken from prison for medical attention. I don't know where he is or when he will be returned to prison." Temime visited the film director last week in a Zurich jail. He says Polanski was depressed and tired at the time of the visit. Polanski, director of the acclaimed film 'The Pianist,' was arrested in September in Switzerland for having sex with a 13-year-old girl in 1977. He fled the United States following his guilty plea in 1978.

Geneva -- Film director Roman Polanski, arrested in Switzerland three weeks ago to face extradition in a U.S. sex case, has been moved from jail for medical treatment, his French lawyer said.
"All I know is that he has been taken from prison for medical attention. I don't know where he is or when he will be returned to prison," French lawyer Herve Temime told Reuters on Saturday.
He said he did not have any other details.
Temime said last week after visiting Polanski in a Zurich jail that he was depressed and tired and expressed concern about his medical condition.
Polanski, 76, was arrested in relation to the U.S. case involving sex with an underage girl dating back more than 30 years, when he arrived in Switzerland on Sept. 26 to collect a lifetime achievement award at a Swiss film festival.

Frankfurt, Germany -- Director Roman Polanski is continuing to work on his film "The Ghost" from his jail cell in Switzerland and expects to deliver it on time before the end of the year.
"The film will be finished," Henning Molfenter, head of production at Studio Babelsberg and a co-producer on "The Ghost," told The Hollywood Reporter. "We will meet all our deadlines and all of our obligations with distributors."
Polanski had already delivered a rough cut of the film -- an adaptation of the Robert Harris best-seller -- before his arrest in Zurich last month on a decades-old sex charge.
Postproduction has continued as the director continues to fight extradition to the U.S. While Polanski's contact with the outside world is limited, it is believed he is being kept up to date with developments and is able to communicate via telephone with editor Herve du Luze and others involved with the project. »
