Scott Foundas’ Top 10 Films of 2014

17 December 2014 3:28 PM, PST | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

It was a year of many tortured geniuses onscreen — Alan Turing, Stephen Hawking, J.M.W. Turner, Brian Wilson — and behind the scenes, where directors like Bong Joon-ho, James Gray and Paul Schrader fought producers and distributors over final cut, and the right to see their films properly released. Of course, the very idea of distribution has become nearly as diffuse in the digital era as that of film itself, a material on which few movies are still made and even fewer shown — unless you happen to be Paul Thomas Anderson, Quentin Tarantino or Christopher Nolan, who earned the ire of some theater owners when he demanded they reinstall 35mm projectors if they wanted to screen his “Interstellar” two days early. In light of the film’s $600 million worldwide gross (and counting), one can only say: poor them.

Speaking of “Interstellar,” if there was one undeniable constant at the movies in 2014, it was time, »

Frankie Grande Wears a Painted-On Shirt to the AMAs

Frankie Grande (who yes, is Ariana Grande's half-brother) chose an interesting shirt for the American Music Awards red carpet Sunday night. That is to say, the YouTube personality, Big Brother contestant and Broadway star chose to paint a shirt on his naked torso. Frankie, 31, paired baby-pink skinny jeans with some black high-tops, and his shirt and pink bow tie matched the fit of his pants: They're quite literally painted on. He can currently be seen on Broadway, where he plays Franz in the musical Rock of Ages. "Good luck hosting the red carpet tonight, you're gonna kill it," Ariana »

Let’s Grade the Big Brother 16 Houseguests

20 November 2014 5:33 AM, PST | TVovermind.com | See recent TVovermind.com news »

It is hard to believe that the 16th season of Big Brother ended two months ago. In June, 16 people entered the Big Brother house and were cut off from the real world. This means no television, internet, or phone service. After three months of tough competition, Derrick Levasseur the undercover police office from Rhode Island took home the $500,000 prize while his Bff in the house Cody Calafiore walked away with second prize. We at TV Overmind decided to grade all 16 houseguests and see who came up at the top of the list (Nicole) and at the bottom (Devin). We will grade each participant in the following categories: Likability, Personality, Length in the House, Physical Compeititons, Mental Competitions. Joey Joey’s stay in the Big Brother house was short-lived. It was even shorter if you figure in the amount of time she decided to be Alex. Joey came into the house wanting to play Big… »

Nick Hewer: 11 things we learned about The Apprentice, Ukip and more

17 November 2014 1:00 AM, PST | Digital Spy | See recent Digital Spy - TV news news »

We love Nick Hewer. Lord Sugar's right-hand man on The Apprentice always seems so wise with his withering gazes and blunt statements, so we couldn't wait to get him on the phone for a natter about, well, a bit of everything.

Taking in The Apprentice, rude words on Countdown, whether he'll ever go into politics (or Strictly) and so much more, here are 11 things we learned from Nick...

1. He has a terrible work-life balance and even used to hide in office cupboards.

"My work-life balance is terrible! Trying to cram in too much. Appalling. I don't know what to do about it. It's always been appalling. I think it started off when I was much younger. It was a sense of insecurity and lack of self-esteem, so I made up for it by working harder than anybody else. And that sort of stuck. When it all started, I was »

'Utopia,' Fox Reality Series, Canceled

2 November 2014 9:00 PM, PST | Uinterview | See recent Uinterview news »

Utopia, the Fox reality TV series that challenged participants to build a new society together, has been canceled.

'Utopia' Canceled

Fox decided to pull the plug on Utopia a month after cutting its weekly episode count. The cancelation, two months into the series, is effective immediately, reported Deadline. The livestream was shut off on Sunday as well. As for the participants who'd signed up to spend a year filming Utopia, they've been notified that their efforts would be cut short and that they'd soon be returning home.

Initially, Fox planned on airing two episodes of Utopia a week – Tuesdays and Fridays – for the first six weeks of the show. However, poor ratings forced the network to air only one episode a week. This past Friday's episode yielded only a 0.5 rating in the 18-49 age bracket and a paltry 1.5 million viewers.

Fox's ‘Utopia’ Cancellation: What Went Wrong With the $50 Million Social Experiment

2 November 2014 6:29 PM, PST | The Wrap | See recent The Wrap news »

Utopia's” failure may have been foretold even before anyone in the United States saw a second of the show. A provocative idea that fell apart in the execution, Fox canceled the series on Sunday after two months of consistently low ratings. From day one, the show suffered from internal bickering at the network's highest levels and a heavy-handed execution by producers and Fox's new alternative chief Simon Andreae. Andreae bought the Dutch format in January from producer John de Mol's Talpa Media, which is also behind such ambitious hits as “Big Brother” and “The Voice.” Fox's alternative programming chief made the bold. »

Why isn't anyone watching Utopia, TV's 'real reality show'?

31 October 2014 2:34 PM, PDT | The Guardian - TV News | See recent The Guardian - TV News news »

Utopia is a high-minded reality show, a genuine social experiment of the kind people say they want. So how come its a ratings disaster on a $50m set?

At every cocktail party there is always that one person who turns up their nose at the mention of reality television. Those people (the slightly less obnoxious cousin to the I dont own a television guy) always say that if reality television was actually a documentary about social dynamics then they would watch it. Heck, even reality fans harken back to some sort of ideal they think they lost. Well, guess what, the show everyone says they want is already on television. It is called Utopia and no one is watching it.

Utopia was one of the great hopes of what is turning out to be a disastrous fall season for Fox. Created by John de Mol one of the 500 richest people »

Strictly Come Dancing's Alison Hammond has revealed that Lisa Riley inspired her to take part in the show.

The This Morning presenter said that the former Emmerdale star's success on the BBC show gave her the confidence to dance in front of the nation.

Asked if she had watched videos of dance partner Aljaz Skorjanec and 2013 winner Abbey Clancy performing together, Hammond replied: "Not once. If I watch anybody, I watch Lisa Riley and no-one else.

"I always watch what her tango was or her cha cha, because she's similar build to me and I like to see how she did it.

"I would probably never have done Strictly unless I'd seen Lisa Riley do it," she added. "She totally inspired me to do it. I think she's brilliant."

Wary of looking "silly", Hammond also said that she and partner Skorjanec take their training very seriously.

Ariana Grande Left Catholicism For Kabbalah Because Of Gay Brother Frankie Grande

Ariana Grande turned to Kabbalah after growing up Catholic because she couldn’t reconcile loving her gay brother Frankie Grande and belonging to a church that rejected his homosexuality.

Ariana Grande Left Catholic Church

Ariana discussed her decision to leave the Catholic church when she realized it did not accept Frankie's homosexuality in a recent interview with The Sunday Telegraph. “I was like, 'Ok, that's not cool,' " the singer told the paper. "They were building a Kabbalah center in Florida so we both checked it out and really had a connection with it."

Kabbalah, a mystical offshoot of Judiasm ushered into the celebrity mainstream by pop icon Madonna, was a religion that both she and her brother could connect to. Years after she first checked it out, Ariana says she's still practicing. In fact, the pop star credits Kabbalah for her many success.
