Movie Review: League Of Gods offers the deadly farts of a six-armed baby in dazzling 3-D

30 July 2016 8:22 AM, PDT | | See recent The AV Club news »

Koan Hui—former man Friday to Hong Kong maestro Tsui Hark and co-writer of Tsui’s Time And Tide and The Blade—makes his directing debut with League Of Gods, a 3-D extravaganza of canted angles and composited whooshes that luxuriates in an unreality unknown in Hollywood outside of the Wachowskis’ Speed Racer. It may not have an ending or even a climax. It may not have dialogue that rises above the level of “So, Nine-Tail Fox isn’t the biggest threat! Actually, it was the Black Dragon!” or characters who emote in anything other than evil, heroic, or lovelorn stares. But it has an old man who turns into a towel and many giant animals and a six-armed baby who flies around on a jet of his own highly pressurized piss, ripping crab-people in half with his seismic waves of flatulence. That counts for something.

Technically speaking, League Of »

Agent Carter season 2 episodes 1 & 2 review: The Lady In The Lake & A View In The Dark

Is Agent Carter season 2 as good as season 1? No. It's even better. The opening two-parter is flawless Marvel television...

This review contains spoilers.

2.1 The Lady In The Lake & 2.2 A View In The Dark

In the past, I’ve criticised Marvel’s TV output for too-frequently failing to meet the high standards of the movies. Even the Netflix output, which has been occasionally excellent, is uneven at best. In fact, of all Marvel’s spin-offs, it’s fair to say that the first season of Agent Carter is the only one they completely nailed. So it’s with some delight I can say that the episodes that get Season 2 rolling are, if anything, even better.

This is, by some distance, as close as I’ve come to feeling like I’m watching a Marvel movie within the TV format. It’s funny, it’s fast-paced, and the characters are multi-faceted but consistent. »
