  • To prepare for the initial love scene between Paul and Connie, director Adrian Lyne had Diane Lane watch the film Aimée & Jaguar (1999).

  • The special edition DVD features the alternate ending where there is a different dialogue after they both kiss in the car, during the final scene. Richard Gere then steps out of the car (very emotional scene) before walking up and entering the police station. Fox & Regency wanted this ending at first (it was more Hollywood-esque, in-your-face, clearer kind of ending), but the director and the cast insisted that they put in the current ending you see on the theatrical release.

  • Brad Pitt and Ryan Phillippe were offered the role of Paul. However during pre-production, the producers decided that Paul be French rather than American, so Olivier Martinez received the part.

  • The scene where Connie rides the train home after her first sexual encounter with Paul, and silently remembers the encounter, was filmed in one continuous take. The camera simply stayed on Diane Lane as she went through a series of expressions, and then the scene was cut and edited together.

  • Robert Redford was offered the role of Edward. George Clooney, John Travolta and Bruce Willis were also in talks for the role.

  • Based on Chabrol's La femme infidèle (1969).

  • Jodie Foster was offered the role of Connie, but turned it down in order to play Meg Altman in Panic Room (2002).

  • Josie Davis auditioned for the role of Connie, but lost out to Diane Lane.

  • Tori Spelling was considered for the role of Connie.

  • Portia de Rossi, Kyra Sedgwick, Brooke Shields and Kate Winslet turned down the role of Connie.

  • Alyssa Milano was originally cast as Connie, but was forced to turn the role down due to her commitment to the TV series "Charmed" (1998).

  • Kristin Davis was offered the role of Connie, but turned it down due to her commitment to the TV series "Sex and the City" (1998).

  • Johnny Depp was considered for the role of Edward.

  • Angelina Jolie auditioned for the role of Connie.

  • Hilary Swank was offered the role of Connie but turned it down.

  • Meg Ryan was the original choice to play Connie.

  • Jennifer Jason Leigh reportedly wanted the role of Connie but Adrian Lyne turned her down.
