What happens at the end?

During the last 45 minutes of the movie, Edward (Richard Gere) finds out about his wife Connie's (Diane Lane) affair with Paul (Olivier Martinez) - a Frenchman she had met at the beginning of the film. Without thinking, Edward goes over to Paul's apartment and knocks him over the head twice with a snowglobe he had originally given to Connie, but she gave to Paul as a thank-you gift. Thinking quickly, Edward wraps Paul's body up in a carpet and - after cleaning up all the blood and wiping his fingerprints off everything - dumps it in his car boot. He then goes over to his son's school play and meets Connie there. Later on that night, Edward sneaks out of the house to dispose of Paul's body which is still in his car boot. The next day, the police go over to Connie's house to tell her that Paul is missing. She claims she didn't know him, but the police found her name and number on his table. One of the officers gives Connie his card and tells her to ring him if she hears from Paul. Connie says she will. That night, Connie, Edward and Sam (their son) are eating out at a restaurant. Sam tells Edward that the police came to their house today. Edward is alarmed and asks Connie what they wanted. Connie just tells him that someone's missing. Over the weekend, the police come back again. Paul's body was found underneath piles of trash for steamrollers to crush over. Connie puts on an act and tells the police that she just remembered who he is; a bookseller who she met at Julian fundraiser (this is untrue, she met him in the city and went back to his apartment to clean a cut on her leg). She continues by saying that she brought a book off of him and that's why he had her number. Edward goes along with her lies. After the police leave, Connie starts to cry. That night, during Sam's birthday party, Connie spies the snowglobe she gave to Paul back in its place amongst their other snowglobes sitting on the shelf. Later that night (after all the party guests have left), Connie confronts Edward and he admits to killing Paul. Eventually, Edward decides to turn himself into the police even though Connie begs him not to. The final shot of the film is Edward, Connie and Sam sitting in their car outside the police station.

End credits.
