Dear Diary, Not the Worst Disney Channel Movie!
3 June 2003 | by (Fairbanks, U.S. Territory of Alaska) – See all my reviews

What a pretty good movie! From the title alone I wasn't expecting much... I've really got to stop judging a movie by it's title because this was surprisingly good! First of all, this has some sci-fi written into... Science Fiction... you know, like Star Wars and E.T. No one should be sitting around saying things like: 'Oh my god, no way, that's sooo not believable.' One thing that was a little goofy was how the bubbles had human-type faces but other than that just let it be, it's sci-fi.

And yes, this did have a sport aspect to it. Do all Disney Channel movies? No. Here, windsurfing was merely in the background. Mrs. Larson owns a windsurfing store because she loves the sport as a hobby and does her daughter Megan. Big Whoop.

The human acting we saw in this was mixed. Sadly, that Cutter dude was just a horrible character. Except when he was rolling down the mountain, whenever Cutter was on screen was kind of painful. Just a really, really bad character. There were a few flawed `American' accents in this by some of the Australian actors. Since this was filmed Down Under, the production incorporated local actors which often fails when it comes to American accents. Sometimes you'd never know an actor wasn't from the U.S. Other times I just cringe ‘cause bad, faked accents show in a negative light as a few did here. Khrystyne Haje I kind of like from her days on Head Of The Class so I enjoyed seeing her in this. Sadly, I saw no good mother/daughter symbiosis. That is something Disney should excel in but here they did not. The mom/daughter relationship wasn't bad, it's just that such a relationship should be more maternal than best friend. Courtnee Draper, on the other hand, was mostly excellent. Unfortunately, her character was portrayed as coniving, boy hungry and popularity obsessed. That should not have been because no young teen should be seeing those things. Ms. Draper's acting, though, was nearly superb, bangs and all... which were not a distraction. Ms. Draper had a certain flair that she brought to her character, a flair that definitely helped to make this movie more enjoyable.

Something that also didn't distract from the movie at all (but might have been a little silly) was the death by hairdryer scene. Were they even plugged in? In fact, it was not shown that they were not plugged in so they could have been! Ever hear of extension cords? Still, like I said, it was a little silly as was the frozen-into-cubes people. Come to think of it, the whole movie was silly, really. This was not a work of art. The writers obviously didn't go through rewrite after rewrite in order to meticulously craft a flawless script. The director is not Steven Spielberg, not even close. But what was produced for you and I to see truly is not that terrible. Flawed, yes... many Disney Channel movies are. For those and for this which I am typing, it comes down to how many flaws there are, how ridiculous the story is, how good or bad the dialogue and acting is. Even the most flawed can be enjoyable to some. This movie has its share of flaws but it works more than many of Disney Channel's movies. I think their main problem is they produce too many. Like every six weeks? Instead of trying to put out a wide variety of new movies they could cut back a little and spend more time on fewer movies. Quality not quantity, Mr. Eisner. Disney Channel could have a lot of truly worthwhile movies. Instead they have many like Stepsister From Planet Weird, many that are decent but nothing special. My grade for this: C+
