Just north of a bomb due to Dennis Farina's presence
9 November 2016 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

"Bad Seed" (2000) aka "Preston Tylk" is another neo-noir listed by critic John Grant, which is why I watched it. This movie is the product of writer-director Jon Bokenkamp. He directed a video documentary in 1995 and then this movie, and that has been his last directing effort as of now, 16 years later. This movie borders on being a bomb, which may explain this career lapse. However, he has since been heavily involved in creating and writing a TV series (Blacklist) that I've never seen.

Dennis Farina does wonders with his role as a private eye. Luke Wilson plays the film with one predominant expression and emotional state, no matter whether he's finding out his wife is unfaithful or whether he is engaging in manslaughter. Wilson is glum throughout. Norman Reedus is the man with whom Wilson's wife had an affair. When she turns up dead, he thinks that Wilson killed her. He then spends most of the movie toying with Wilson and finding him wherever he hides, while Wilson, aided by Farina, is looking for Reedus. Meanwhile, the police are also looking for Wilson.

It's hard to become emotionally engaged in this story or these characters, other than Farina's. The IMDb rating (5.5) suggests a movie somewhat but not a lot under par. I think it's worse than that. The story has no meaning, no theme. It lays there and seems pointless. It might have been something with better character development. But the actions of Wilson as a murderer (of Reedus's brother) very early in the movie doesn't seem motivated or linked to his character. And nothing about the behavior of Reedus's character makes much sense. Farina's character is amusing, but also his actions are actually beyond belief.

The movie cannot escape seeming fake rather than real.
