Hughie Mack has gotten so fat that he can't fit into a telephone booth, so he decides to exercise and reduce. Thirty seconds later, he is super-strong and shoves cars apart, defeats armed bandits and rescues the ladies.
Before Larry Semon came to Vitagraph, he had been a cartoonist, and he brought his cartoon sensibilities with him to direct Hughie Mack -- who, before he had become a star comic for Vitagraph, had been a mortician -- in a very funny short subject. Such are the vagaries of life that led to movie stardom in those days.
Afterwards, Hughie wound up in very serious roles in Erich von Stroheim's movies and Semon went in front of the camera, became a star, hogged all the gags and went into a steep artistic decline in the 1920s. Some things never change.
