Storyline

Hedwig, born male as Hansel in East Berlin, fell in love with an American G.I. and underwent a Gender Confirmation Surgery in order to marry him and flee to the West. Unfortunately, nothing worked out quite as it was supposed to - years later, Hedwig is leading her rock band on a tour of the U.S., telling her life story through a series of concerts at Bilgewater Inn seafood restaurants. Her tour dates coincide with those of arena-rock star Tommy Gnosis, a wide-eyed boy who once loved Hedwig - but then left with all her songs. Written by Anonymous

Trivia

Although this is not clear in the movie, in the musical Hedwig describes how she agreed to marry Yitzhak, a Jewish drag queen from Zagreb, Croatia, only after extracting a promise from him to never do drag again. Hedwig seems to be afraid of Yitzhak becoming more feminine than she and paid more attention to, and Yitzhak bitterly resents Hedwig's treatment of him. To further the musical's theme of blurred gender lines, Yitzhak is always played by a woman. See more »

Goofs

During the sequence in the trailer where the wall drops, the first shot shows the window on which Hedwig is stepping is closed. The second clearly shows it open by the curtain bowing towards the ground, and the third shows it closed once again. See more »

astoundingly brilliant, somewhat disturbing. A must see.
23 November 2005 | by (Davenport, IA, USA) – See all my reviews

This was a film I had planned to watch for an extremely long time, it was lent to me by an ethics professor and I was blown away. I was astounded. Never could I have imagined how visually and sonically pleasing Hedwig would be all at once, yet surprisingly disturbing. And this is coming from a homosexual man who has spent an enormous amount of time around persons who have had sex changes, and innumerable drag queens. Hedwig also gave a startling new look at the collapse of (and years previous to) the Berlin wall. EVEN IF YOU THINK YOU WON'T LIKE THIS FILM SEE IT ANYWAY, you will be surprised. What I took that was even more unexpected than anything else, was great joy in the songs. Each song, particularly "The Origin Of Love", and "Angry Inch" were songs I would listen to without prompting from the film.
