‘Beginners’ and ‘Tree Of Life’ Split The Honours For Best Feature At The 2011 Gotham Awards

29 November 2011 7:38 AM, PST | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

While the reviews for Beginners were almost all positive, very few people have had a chance to see the film. I myself watch over 100 new releases each year and it still took me a few months to catch up on the movie. I finally got around to seeing Beginners this week and called it the most overlooked film of 2011. I guess I can no longer say this. Last night, the Gotham Independent Film Awards surprised everyone with a tie for Best Feature Film with Mike MillsBeginners and Terrence Malick‘s The Tree of Life taking the top prize. Who would have ever guessed?

Best Feature winners from the past several years include Frozen River, Winter’s Bone, and The Hurt Locker. Hit the jump for the full press release.

'Black Swan' Is The Perfect Winner At 2011 Spirit Awards

26 February 2011 6:46 PM, PST | NextMovie | See recent NextMovie news »

The debate rages on as to whether the doomed Nina really did dance a "perfect" performance of "Swan Lake" in "Black Swan."

But the Independent Spirit Awards have certainly acknowledged that the movie itself came pretty close to perfection.

"Black Swan" swept the Spirit Awards with wins for Best Feature, Best Female Lead, Best Director and Best Cinematography. Darren Aronofsky's operatic tale of fear, loathing and madness at the New York City Ballet won in every category for which it was nominated.

While Natalie Portman may have beaten Jennifer Lawrence in the Best Female Lead category, "Winter's Bone" did take home awards for the performances of two of its supporting players, Dale Dickey and Jack Hawkes.

Meanwhile, the co-host of this year's Oscars, James Franco, won for his lead performance in "127 Hours." The newly PG-13-rated "The King's Speech" won Best Foreign Film and "Exit Through the Gift Shop" won Best Documentary, »

Javier Bardem. His Lips Are Busy!

Sunday February 13th was quite the awards jam. Nicole Kidman was jamming to Katy Perry at the Grammys, Helena Bonham Carter was being crowned at BAFTA, and Javier Bardem was in Madrid winning The Goya to add to his huge statue haul.

Does Penélope Cruz know where his lips have been? He loves to kiss his trophies.

Javiin 2011 with his Goya; Javi in 2008 with his Oscar

'Oh to be a slab of stone / gold plating!' shriek millions of fans in unison.

Javier has won plentiful awards over the years for his in arguable screen presence and acting gift: one Oscar, one BAFTA, one Golden Globe, one Spirit Award, one "actor" from SAG, one Nbr, two Volpi cups from Venice, two European Film Awards, two Gothams, two ADIRCAEs (no, I don't know what that is either) and numerous critics prizes. But it's at the Goyas, the Spanish Oscars, where he reigns supreme. »

Meanwhile in Regular Awardage...

Nicole Kidman arrives at Sbiff. [photo via Scott Feinberg]Busy night for gongs last night. Nicole Kidman accepted her Vanguard award at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival. [Photo left via Scott Feinberg.] I'm sure she'll cherish that one as much as her Film Experience Gold Medal ;)

The Annie Awards for animation also took place even. You can see the results here. It was a huge night for How To Train Your Dragon which is such a good film but the wins will undoubtedly be viewed as unimportant due to the Annies troubled relationship with Disney/Pixar. Pixar won only Best Short for Day and Night.

The Adg handed out their Art Direction honors [full info at Gold Derby] which went to The King's Speech (Period), Inception (fantasy) and Black Swan (contemporary). Swan wasn't nominated for Oscar but DePrez took the bronze medal here at the Film Experience. I'm sure that'll be great consolation.

Earlier that evening the WGA handed out their screenwriting honors. »
