Best. Lesbian. Decade. Ever. (2000 - 2009)

31 December 2009 3:40 PM, PST | AfterEllen.com | See recent AfterEllen.com news »

As 2009 comes to a close, we take a look back at some of the people and events that made this the Best. Lesbian. Decade. Ever. in pop culture.

Luckily for all of us, there was far more information to have mentioned from the last ten years than we could have included in this brief survey. That's why our lists for each year are not intended to be exhaustive, but are instead snapshots of different memorable moments that included the representation of lesbians and bisexual women in film, television, music, literature, comics, sports and the Internet since the year 2000.

Mexican ranchera music legend Chavela Vargas publicly came out as a lesbian at the tender age of 81.

Top 5 Writers/Creators Currently On Television

30 December 2009 6:21 PM, PST | TVovermind.com | See recent TVovermind.com news »

Alan Ball, True Blood

The debate was fierce in TV Overmind back offices but I managed to come out with a list of the Top 5 Writers/Creators Currently On Television.  The stringent criteria were three-fold and eliminated several contenders.

Qualification #1 – The writer/creator must have had more than one hit, which knocked Marc Cherry of "Desperate Housewives" and "Supernatural"s Eric Kripke out of the running.

Qualification #2 – The shows must be original entities and not spin-offs.  Sorry Shonda Rhimes of "Grey's Anatomy" and "Private Practice", and Russell T. Davies of "Doctor Who", "Torchwood" and "The Sarah Jane Adventures".

Qualification #3 – They must currently have a series on the air.  David E. Kelley's "Boston Legal" ended in 2008, so his vast legacy, which includes "Picket Fences", "Ally McBeal", and "The Practice", doesn't get a shot.  And Aaron Sorkin ("Sports Night", "The West Wing", and "Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip") is also between projects. »

The Notable Films of 2010: Part Seven

29 December 2009 7:16 AM, PST | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

Mother and Child

Opens: 2010

Cast: Naomi Watts, Annette Bening, Samuel L. Jackson, Kerry Washington

Director: Rodrigo Garcia

Summary: A tale of a mother and daughter, separated at birth, who struggle with the damage done by the most important person missing in their lives while a young African-Americn woman deals with an unwanted pregnancy and the adoption process.

Analysis: Scoring rave reviews in Toronto, the $7 million latest effort of Rodrigo Garcia ("Nine Lives," "Things You Can Tell Just By Looking At Her") once again shows off his skill at weaving multiple narratives together in clever and unexpected ways. At its heart it's an emotional family drama, but Garcia excels with his female characters which makes the involvement of Naomi Watts, Kerry Washington and especially Annette Benning thrilling.

The few criticisms levelled at the film were toward some pacing and credibility issues in the last act, but otherwise praised it for not »

AfterElton.com Readers Name Director, Author and TV Writer of the Decade!

28 December 2009 9:14 AM, PST | The Backlot | See recent The Backlot news »

Ang Lee, Alan Ball, David Sedaris

To mark the end of the Aughts, we gave readers the chance to name those they felt who had the biggest impact over the past ten years in a variety of pop culture areas. Over the next week we are going to be announcing the winners starting with the movie director, television writer and author. Up first, our only straight winner!

Film Director: Ang Lee

Having made Brokeback Mountain (#1 in our 2009 poll of the greatest gay movies) alone likely would have been enough to earn Ang Lee this award, but the gay-friendly director also made Taking Woodstock, another gay-themed flick, just this year, as well as The Wedding Banquet back in 1993. Clearly, he loves telling our stories and we love him for doing so!

TV Writer: Alan Ball

Brittany Murphy to launch pop career?

24 December 2009 2:34 AM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Actress with singing aspirations could end up in the charts if the record label decide to put out her unreleased music

In this culture of cash-in, music execs have reportedly already started plumbing the archives for unreleased music by actress Brittany Murphy, who died this week. After scoring a 2006 hit with DJ Paul Oakenfold, Murphy had allegedly worked on an album with producers Max Martin and Timbaland.

"Obviously this isn't a Michael Jackson thing, but people are definitely interested in Brittany and her story," a source from the unspecified label reportedly told E! Online. "Depending on what she may have recorded and what kind of quality it is, she could end up having a hit song or two."

In the 1990s, Murphy and Six Feet Under actor Eric Balfour formed a rock group called Blessed Soul. Later, Murphy recorded covers of Queen's Somebody to Love and Earth, Wind & Fire's »

Deconstructing the decade from 'The Shield' and beyond: Zap2it Rick's favorite episodes

23 December 2009 10:43 AM, PST | Zap2It - From Inside the Box | See recent Zap2It - From Inside the Box news »

You can scarcely swing a dead cat lately without hitting some kind of best-of-the-decade list (even though, technically, the first decade of the 21st century doesn't end till next year).

Well, here comes another one. Rather than try to construct another best-shows-of-the-'00s list, though -- something that's already been done here, there and everywhere -- I decided to focus on individual episodes from 2000-09. Are these the flat-out "best" episodes of television over the past 10 years? Probably not. But these are the ones that stick with me, that I can still remember not just for brilliant lines or beautifully constructed plots, but for how I actually felt while watching them. They are, simply, my favorites.

Here's my list, in no particular order. What's yours?

HBO sent critics the entire run of season four of "The Wire" before it premiered in 2006. I had watched the first »

Starz Renews Spartacus, Hires HBO’s Chris Albrecht as New CEO

22 December 2009 10:15 AM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Yesterday, The Live Feed reported that Starz is ordering a second season of its new original series Spartacus: Blood and Sand before even one episode of the show has aired. The show is a look at the world of gladiators in ancient Rome, said to be in the graphic style of 300. It stars Andy Whitfield, Lucy Lawless, John Hannah, and Peter Mensah, and counts Sam Raimi among its producers.

Now Deadline reports that Starz has recruited Chris Albrecht to be its new president and CEO. Albrecht used to be the chairman and CEO of HBO until he resigned in 2007 at the request of the company due to an assault charge. It is under Albrecht’s guide that HBO staked its substantial claim in original programming with such acclaimed series as The Sopranos, Sex and the City, Six Feet Under, Deadwood, Curb Your Enthusiasm and The Wire. My ten years as a TV critic by Kathryn Flett | Feature

19 December 2009 4:40 PM, PST | The Guardian - TV News | See recent The Guardian - TV News news »

For 10 years, Kathryn Flett held her dream job: watching the box… and being paid for it, too. Now she has written her last dispatch from the sofa. Here she presses the rewind button…

I didn't plan it this way, honest, but the very last word of the final sentence of the review that turned out to be my last as the Observer's TV critic was "Cowell", and as he currently occupies a metaphorical throne at the centre of primetime TV (though technically, of course, Simon is always on the far right of the screen, next to Cheryl) it feels as though the c-word is a fitting pay-off after frittering away 10 years of my life in front of the telly.

But indulge me while I rewind to the summer of 1999, not only a previous century and a technological aeon ago (when I used to watch the bulk of TV programmes on Vcr, »

A Soldier's Story

Some roles are hard to shake. Ben Foster ("3:10 to Yuma," "Alpha Dog," "Six Feet Under") found this out the hard way on a recent promotional tour for his new film "The Messenger." At Hunter Airfield Base in Georgia, he started experiencing severe leg pain from an injury he never suffered. His leg "froze up," he says. "I couldn't walk downstairs without limping. It was so strange." Foster plays a soldier recovering from leg and eye injuries after returning from Iraq. "The mind and the imagination are really curious places. I'm sure those things will drift. That's what we do" as actors, he says. "We allow ourselves to believe things. It's just an occupational hazard." He adds, "I definitely need a vacation soon."Foster's vacation will have to wait, as he is currently shooting a remake of the 1972 Charles Bronson thriller "The Mechanic" with Jason Statham in New Orleans. Shonda Rhimes explains why Arizona got the girl

8 December 2009 2:00 PM, PST | AfterEllen.com | See recent AfterEllen.com news »

Love it or hate it, Grey’s Anatomy changed television.

That may seem an overstatement, since Grey’s isn’t in the category of the dramas usually referred to as transformational — The Sopranos, Mad Men or Six Feet Under, for example. But in terms of pop culture, the influence of the show is obvious every time someone says, “Seriously?” or refers to an essential part of the body as the “va-jay-jay.”

Sure, Grey’s often is infuriating, but that’s just proof that we have an emotional investment in the characters and their stories. And for that, we have to thank Shonda Rhimes, who was chosen as one of TV Guide’s “Players” — the people who made the decade’s best TV.

Rhimes takes her place among J.J. Abrams (Alias, Lost, Fringe), Aaron Sorkin (The West Wing, Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip), Dick Wolf (Law & Order, ad infinitum) and »

Five Questions with Patricia Clarkson

4 December 2009 6:02 PM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

In an industry where actresses face fewer options as they get older, Patricia Clarkson has defied the odds. Years after making her debut in Brian de Palma's 1987 crime pic The Untouchables and landing a breakthrough role in 1998's High Art, she's hit her stride and become one of Hollywood's most popular character actresses. In the decade of the '00s alone, the plaudits and awards have come left and right: an Oscar nomination for Pieces of April, two Emmy wins for HBO's "Six Feet Under,"and critics' awards for Far From Heaven, The Station Agent, Good Night, and Good Luck. (In 2009, the Year of the Cougar, Clarkson was also handpicked to star in Saturday Night Live's "Motherlover," an honor of another kind.)

So when Cinematical met Clarkson during last month's Savannah Film Festival, we jumped at the chance to talk with the actress about her career - past, »
