Well, in the book he just had testicular cancer and never died. But the producers for the movie thought that topic was too adult for the movie, so they said that he died, and in some sort of "accident." In the movie, Clarisse says, "Then, the terrible accident....." so we can decide that he died in a car accident or something like that.
