Mega Man X series takes a plunge.
19 March 2002 | by (Colorado) – See all my reviews

Mega Man X is no doubtedly one of the best platform gaming series ever designed for any (and all) console(s). Playing through every game in order really gives a sense of a nice plot, nice continuation. Mega Man X3 kind of dropped the X series because of its frustration with the capsules, but it is nowhere near a drop X4 has taken us.

First, before I mention anything else, X is not a sissy boy, yet his voice screams out "sissy". We have a child in robotic armor who has not hit puberty yet.

The plotline is extremely simple. Once again, Sigma is back. How many times is this virus going to survive his encounters with the Hunters? I really think that the X series needs a new antagonist. We find a new one in X5, but he doesn't even show up.

Mega Man X4 has the wrong title. The game is hardly about X. Most people will want to play as Zero, since he could hardly be played on X3. Also, the most intriguing storyline comes into play when you follow Zero's adventure, such as the cool animation sequence of the battle against Colonel. As X, you have to fight Colonel yourself.

What this game lacks in common sense, it makes up for in graphics. The graphics are a step up from previous X games and has a newer, arcade style appearance. However, Mega Man X looks awful, especially his stance. Once again, he looks like a child, only this time a very fatigued one.

Also, there is a huge jump in time between X3 and X4. We know nothing about Repliforce in X3, nor the space colonies. Suddenly in X4 we see both all the time.

If you're going to play this game, I would suggest you only play as Zero. His is the true storyline, and is much more satisfying.

Mega Man X4 reeks of Mega Man X.
