Van Houten joins Cruise for 'Valkyrie'

Carice Van Houten is set to play the female lead opposite Tom Cruise in Bryan Singer's Valkyrie for United Artists. Tom Wilkinson also has joined the World War II-set drama.

Penned by Christopher McQuarrie and Nathan Alexander, the story is based on the true-life attempts to assassinate Adolf Hitler. Kenneth Branagh already has joined the cast.

Singer, Paula Wagner and McQuarrie are producing the film, which will begin shooting in July in Berlin.

Van Houten, who will play the love interest to Cruise's character in the film, enjoyed a breakout performance in Paul Verhoeven's Nazi drama Black Book. The classically trained actress also is a theater veteran in her native Netherlands.

She is repped by CAA.

Wilkinson, whose recent credits include Batman Begins, Separate Lies and The Exorcism of Emily Rose, was nominated for an Academy Award for 2002's In the Bedroom.

He is repped by Lou Coulson in the U.K. and Larry Taube at Principal Entertainment. »

Marcus new executive vp at Relativity

CANNES -- Andrew Marcus has been promoted to executive vp at Relativity Media.

The move was announced from by the company's principal, Ryan Kavanaugh.

Marcus joined Relativity in summer 2005 and helped Kavanaugh structure and oversee several transactions, including the financing packages Gun Hill Road I, Gun Hill Road II and Beverly Blvd., Relativity's five-year co-financing deal with Sony Pictures Entertainment.

"Andrew has proven himself to be a very valuable asset to Relativity," Kavanaugh said.

Marcus worked as an independent producer and financial consultant and as a production executive at GreeneStreet Films, where he helped manage production on such films as In the Bedroom and Swimfan. He began his career at Miramax Films. »

Higgins to vp publicity post at WB

Veteran marketing and publicity executive Dennis Higgins has been named vp national publicity at Warner Bros. Pictures.

Higgins will head one of the department's three publicity teams, reporting to Juli Goodwin, who was recently promoted to senior vp national publicity.

"Dennis Higgins brings more than 20 years' experience in entertainment publicity and marketing to our publicity group," Warners domestic theatrical marketing president Dawn Taubin said. "He has worked on films of every genre, both large and small, and has earned the respect and admiration of both his colleagues and the media."

Higgins moves to Warners from Bauer Martinez Entertainment, the production and distribution company that has been downsizing quickly in recent months. He had been the company's senior vp publicity since 2005.

Before that, Higgins had been at Intermedia Entertainment, where he was senior vp marketing and corporate communications for two years. He joined Intermedia from Miramax, where from 2001-02 he worked on a variety of projects, including the Oscar-winning Chicago and In the Bedroom.

From 1989-2001, Higgins was senior vp publicity at Columbia Pictures, where he was involved in the campaigns of As Good as It Gets, Jerry Maguire and Philadelphia. He also worked on such blockbusters as Charlie's Angels, Men in Black, Air Force One, My Best Friend's Wedding, Sleepless in Seattle and Basic Instinct.

Higgins also had stints at 20th Century Fox and MGM/UA. »

'Strange' deal reunites Katz, GreeneStreet

NEW YORK -- GreeneStreet Films and producer Ross Katz are reteaming to create a feature adaptation of John Searles' offbeat mystery novel Strange but True.

GreeneStreet purchased Searles' screenplay and film rights to the author's 2004 sophomore book and plans to finance the project. It will bring the production company behind A Prairie Home Companion together with Katz (Marie Antoinette) for the third time, after Todd Field's 2001 drama In the Bedroom and their upcoming adaptation of Adverbs, Daniel Handler's romantic novel revolving around gay and straight affairs.

New York-based Katz brought GreeneStreet the Strange project, which begins when a teenager's girlfriend arrives at his family's home five years after his death insisting that she is pregnant with his child.

Searles is deputy editor of Cosmopolitan magazine. His writing credits include the coming-of-age novel Boy Still Missing. The author recently signed a two-book contract with HarperCollins and is now at work on his third novel.

GreeneStreet's upcoming projects include Wedding Daze (formerly known as The Pleasure of Your Company), set for release this year through MGM. »
