Music Sales: ‘Frozen’ Soundtrack Ices Competition

15 January 2014 3:07 PM, PST | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

The soundtrack for Disney’s toon hit “Frozen” clung to the top of the U.S. album chart for a second frame last week amid typically quiet January music sales.

Despite a slip of 48% from its previous week’s tally, “Frozen” still collected sales of 86,000 copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan data for the week ending Jan. 12. That tally – the first under 100,000 units for a No. 1 album since September — was big enough to retain the crown for the soundtrack for a second week. The album has moved 589,000 to date. “Frozen” has grossed $318 million in eight weeks on domestic screens.

Another late-2013 star performer, Beyonce’s self-titled Columbia release, also held its ground at No. 2 with 79,000 sold )down 40%).

L.A. rapper Kid Ink had the distinction of becoming the first new artist to grace the top 10 in 2014, as his major-label debut “My Own Lane” (RCA) bowed at No. 3 with a 50,000-unit score. »

The album, drawn from the Mouse’s animated hit based on Hans Christian Andersen’s “The Snow Queen,” climbed three slots and took the national crown in its sixth chart frame with 165,000 copies sold (up 55%), according to Nielsen SoundScan data for the week ended Jan. 5.

The album, featuring songs by Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez, is the first Disney soundtrack release to reach the top of the national chart since “Pocahontas” pulled off the feat in 1995. Two decades ago, the soundtrack for Disney’s “The Lion King” became one of the biggest movie-driven hits ever, holding No. 1 for 10 weeks and shifting more than 10 million copies in the U.S. alone.

The “Frozen” set, which has sold 503,000 to date, has benefited »
